5th GFNY Monterrey this Sunday

Riders will tackle iconic Chipinque

This Sunday, GFNY Monterrey opens the jam-packed 2023 GFNY Mexico season. Riders get to compete on a 137 km course with an elevation gain of 1386m and a hilltop finish on iconic Chipinque. Start and finish will be at Macroplaza which true to its name is the world’s fifth largest plaza. Monterrey is Mexico’s second largest city with a population of over five million.

“GFNY Monterrey is a unique chance for racers of all levels to compete in a metropolis with roads closed to traffic just for them in total safety,” says GFNY co-founder Uli Fluhme.

Daniela and Shaun Gad and their team have done an incredible job in Mexico not just to grow GFNY with multiple races, but also to grow road cycling in general. Mass participation cycling races did not exist in Mexico when they started GFNY Cozumel in 2014”

Fluhme adds: “Today, GFNY and other brands are making sure the road cycling scene keeps flourishing. GFNY Cozumel celebrates its 10th anniversary this November for which we expect 3000 riders. They will turn the paradise island into a massive road cycling party.”

Race week activities at GFNY Monterrey will take place at the Pabellon M.  It includes the fun GFNY Monterrey group ride on Saturday in La Huasteca where riders get to do a relaxed ride together with friends and competitors.

The first part of the race is mostly flat combined with some rolling hills, initially through the heart of Monterrey on fully closed roads. The main challenge of the day will be the final climb to the finish on top of iconic Chipinque which is a natural reserve and fully closed to GFNY racers. It has an average gradient of 6% and is peaking at a whopping 19%.
