Sprint finish after racing above 3000m

7th GFNY Colombia Bogotá was won by defending champion Diego Vasquez and Natalia Pardo

New York City, May 3, 2023 – A head to head sprint decided the male race at the 7th GFNY Bogotá  after 101.1 km with an elevation gain of 2321 m and a hilltop finish at iconic El Águila, situated above 3100m.

The race started fast inside the famous salt mines of Zipaquirá. Giovany Malaver (Colombia) made a successful early break away from the peloton.  The chase group including defending champion Diego Vasquez (Colombia), managed to close the gap during the ascent of El Águila.

After a string of unsuccessful attacks from both riders to escape for a solo finish, at the end it was Vasquez who took the win with a powerful uphill sprint to the finish line in 2:56:11 against Malaver.  Juan Lopez Gomez rounded out the all Colombian podium two minutes back.

In the female race, ex pro Natalia Pardo took the win in 3:28:54, 6 minutes ahead of Alejandra Cadena and Elvia Cardenas (all Colombia).

Next up on the GFNY calendar is the 11th edition of GFNY World Championship NYC which will take place Sunday, May 21, 2023.

Riders will race above 3000m high

This Sunday, GFNY Bogotá offers riders a challenging 101.1 km race course with an elevation gain of 2321 m and a hilltop finish at iconic El Águila.  GFNY Bogotá starts from inside the famous salt mines of Zipaquirá, also known as the Salt Cathedral, at 2650 m above sea level.

We’re very grateful for that because Colombians are aficionados of our sport,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “Colombians ‘get’ the sport like few other nations. A GFNY there guarantees to be hard fought and emotional – the two ingredients for a road race I like the most.”

On Sunday, the first 20km of the race will be mostly flat combined with some rolling hills.  The main challenge of the day will be the final climb of 15 km long at 3.3% with a total of 523m of elevation gain to the finish on top of iconic El Águila.  During the ascent, riders will race above 3000m over sea level.

If you’re participating in a GFNY, it’s essential to ensure that your bike is in excellent condition. Preparing your bike for a GFNY involves more than just pumping up the tires and oiling the chain. In this article, we’ll share some tips on how to prepare your bike for a GFNY.

  1. Get a Tune-Up Before you start preparing your bike for a GFNY, take it to a professional bike shop for a tune-up. A professional tune-up will ensure that your bike is in top condition and running smoothly. The mechanic will check and adjust your brakes, gears, chain, and other components to ensure that they’re functioning correctly.

  2. Check Your Tires Check your tires for wear and tear, and make sure that they’re inflated to the recommended pressure. In a GFNY, you’ll encounter different types of terrain, including hills and rough roads. Make sure that your tires are in good condition and have sufficient tread to handle these conditions.

  3. Lubricate Your Chain A well-lubricated chain is essential for smooth and efficient gear shifting. Use a high-quality chain lubricant to oil your chain, and wipe off any excess oil with a clean cloth. A clean and lubricated chain will also prevent rust and corrosion.

  4. Check Your Brakes Your brakes are a crucial safety component of your bike. Check your brake pads for wear and tear, and make sure that they’re aligned and functioning correctly. Test your brakes by squeezing the levers and ensure that they’re responsive.

  5. Adjust Your Gears Your gears play a significant role in your performance during a GFNY. Check your gears to make sure that they’re shifting smoothly and accurately. If your gears need adjustment, take your bike to a professional mechanic to get them tuned.

  6. Pack Essential Tools During a GFNY, you may encounter mechanical issues on the road. Pack essential tools such as a spare tube, tire levers, a multi-tool, a pump, and a chain tool. These tools will help you fix any mechanical issues that you may encounter during the ride.

In conclusion, preparing your bike for a GFNY involves more than just basic maintenance. It’s crucial to ensure that your bike is in top condition and ready to handle the challenging conditions that you’ll encounter during the ride. By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for a GFNY and enjoy a safe and rewarding experience.

GFNY updates course for pro race in NYC

The GFNY World Championship NYC on May 21 anticipates the 2024 GP GFNY New York City pro race

New York City, April 20, 2023 – The 11th annual GFNY World Championship NYC on May 21 is being transformed to a test race for a new UCI 1.2 pro race planned for May 19, 2024: the Gran Premio GFNY New York City. The race will draw pro teams from Europe and the Americas to the iconic start line on George Washington Bridge in New York City. It is scheduled to start 15 minutes ahead of the mass participation race which travels the exact same route as the pro race.

In anticipation of the pro race next year, riders of this year’s mass participation race GFNY World Championship NYC get to test the 136 km (84 mile) course with 1930m (6330 feet) of climbing. The course features the classic start on the world’s busiest bridge, George Washington Bridge (GWB), travels through Bergen County and Rockland County and back to finish in Fort Lee, NJ, in full view of the GWB.

A number of select pro cyclists will join the race to test the course. Cash primes for the first three to summit Alpine Hill, Gate Hill and Cheesecote will animate the race. The first six non-pro finishers overall will get to race the GP GFNY NYC pro race in 2024 as “Team GFNY”.

“Adding a pro race minutes ahead of the mass participation race is a fantastic opportunity for amateur riders to compare themselves to the best in the sport,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme.

“Pros even from World Tour teams have raced GFNY in the past. But an actual pro race minutes ahead of the amateurs will bring GFNY a step closer to integrating professional racing in a mass participation race. Running and triathlon have shown the power of this format where all athletes get to race against their heroes. It’s time for cycling to follow this successful model at select races.”

Riding in a peloton is a fundamental aspect of road cycling, and it’s essential to master the art of group riding if you want to improve your performance. A peloton, which refers to a group of cyclists riding closely together, offers numerous benefits, including drafting and conserving energy. However, it can also be daunting for beginners and experienced riders alike. In this article, we’ll share five tips to help you improve your riding in a peloton.

  1. Maintain a Consistent Speed One of the most important things to remember when riding in a peloton is to maintain a consistent speed. Sudden changes in speed can cause crashes and disrupt the flow of the group. Try to ride at a pace that everyone in the group is comfortable with, and avoid sudden accelerations or decelerations. If you need to slow down or stop, use hand signals and communicate with the other riders.

  2. Keep a Steady Line Maintaining a steady line is essential when riding in a peloton. A steady line means riding straight and not swerving or veering from side to side. This is important for safety reasons and to avoid collisions with other riders. Keep your bike steady and your movements predictable.

  3. Learn to Draft Drafting is the technique of riding close behind another rider to reduce wind resistance and conserve energy. When you’re riding in a peloton, try to stay behind the rider in front of you, about one wheel lengths away. This will help you save energy and maintain a higher speed. However, be sure to pay attention to the movements of the riders in front of you and adjust your speed and position accordingly.

  4. Communicate with Other Riders Communication is key when riding in a peloton. Use hand signals to let the other riders know what you’re doing. For example, signal when you’re slowing down, stopping, or turning. If you need to move to the front of the group, communicate your intentions with the other riders.

  5. Stay Focused and Alert When you’re riding in a peloton, it’s important to stay focused and alert at all times. Keep your eyes on the road ahead and be aware of the movements of the other riders. Watch out for hazards like potholes, debris, and other obstacles, and be ready to react quickly if necessary. Also, avoid distractions like wearing headphones which are illegal at a GFNY.

In conclusion, riding in a peloton can be an exhilarating and rewarding experience, but it requires skill, practice, and awareness. By following these five tips, you can improve your riding in a peloton and enjoy the benefits of group cycling while staying safe and confident on the road.

Climbing is a challenging aspect of cycling that requires both physical and mental strength. Whether you’re training for a mountainous race or simply looking to improve your climbing abilities, there are several strategies that can help you become a stronger climber.

  1. Lose Weight

One of the most effective ways to improve your climbing is to reduce your overall weight. The less weight you have to carry up a hill, the easier it will be to climb. This doesn’t mean you need to go on an extreme diet, but making healthy choices and shedding a few pounds can make a noticeable difference in your climbing performance.

  1. Build Endurance

Climbing is all about endurance, so it’s important to train your body to handle long, sustained efforts. Incorporate longer rides into your training program, gradually increasing the length and intensity of your climbs over time. Building endurance takes time, so be patient and stay consistent with your training.

  1. Improve Your Power-to-Weight Ratio

While reducing your overall weight is important, improving your power-to-weight ratio is equally important. This means increasing your power output while maintaining a healthy weight. To improve your power, focus on interval training and strength training exercises like squats and lunges.

  1. Practice Your Climbing Technique

Climbing technique can make a big difference in your performance. Focus on keeping your upper body relaxed and your core engaged. Shift your weight forward and keep your pedals turning smoothly. Practice climbing in and out of the saddle to develop a versatile technique that can adapt to different terrain.

  1. Train on Similar Terrain

If you’re preparing for a specific race or event, try to train on terrain that is similar to the course. This will help you become familiar with the type of climbing you’ll encounter and develop the specific skills needed to tackle those climbs.

  1. Mental Preparation

Climbing can be mentally challenging, so it’s important to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically. Visualize yourself successfully completing a climb and focus on positive self-talk to keep yourself motivated. Set small goals along the way, such as reaching a certain landmark or completing a certain distance, to help you stay focused and motivated.

Improving your climbing abilities takes time and dedication, but with consistent training and a focus on technique and mental preparation, you can become a stronger, more confident climber. Remember to listen to your body and adjust your training as needed, and consider consulting with a GFNY coach before beginning any new training program.

GFNY announces Athletes´Choice Awards 2022

Post race surveys key to determine category winners

New York City, April 5, 2023 – GFNY announces the 2022 top 3 best events overall, the best finish village, best pre-race activities, best race destination, best pre race communication, best start area, best aid stations, best course, best course organization and best finish line.

The results are based on post-race surveys that all riders receive. They capture rankings as well as open feedback.

La corsa la fanno i corridori, the racers make the race, is one of our key phrases at GFNY since we started 13 years ago,” says co-founder Lidia Fluhme. “Its original meaning is that riders make a race hard, not the course.”

But to us it also means our races live and breathe because of the riders and how much enjoyment GFNY brings to them. Some of the results were surprising to us which confirms the importance of the survey responses we get. And we know every rider has different preferences so these awards also help other riders which GFNYs to pick out of the 30+ held this year.”
