Miguel Arroyo took the win in the male race while Team Pato Bike dominated female race
New York City, June 7, 2022 – A head to head sprint decided the male race at the 4th Ford GFNY Monterrey after 137km of racing with an elevation gain of 1549m and a hilltop finish on iconic Chipinque.
Under clear skies and very hot temperatures, the race started out fast on Monterrey’s city highways with speeds hitting over 60kph. After a string of attacks from the gun, it was at km 50 when a group of eight riders successfully got away from the peloton.
On the final ascent of Chipinque to the finish line, two riders took the lead, climbing at 25kph: Miguel Arroyo and Miguel Angel Herrera (both from Mexico) fought tooth and nail to shake each other. At the end it was Arroyo who took the win in a tight sprint finish in 2:52:43. Tomas Aguirre rounded out the all Mexican podium three minutes behind the leaders.
In the female race, Team Pato Bike dominated by taking the first four spots. The team worked together until the final climb up Chipinque, where Marcela Prieto climbed the fastest to win in 3:02:23. Karen Loren Villamizar Varon and Paola Macias Estrada rounded out the team podium.
Next up on the GFNY calendar is a Super Sunday: the inaugural races GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet and GFNY Ann Arbor – Michigan take place this Sunday, June 12, 2022.

Mexico’s second largest city hosts the 4th edition
Ford GFNY Monterrey offers riders a 137km course with an elevation gain of 1549m and a hilltop finish on iconic Chipinque. This year’s race will start on Macroplaza which true to its name is the world’s fifth largest plaza.
“We’re excited to be back in Monterrey,” says Shaun Gad, co-founder of GFNY Mexico. “The city of Monterrey has always been a great host to GFNY and this year is no exception. The red carpet will be rolled out yet again for all riders to BE A PRO FOR A DAY®. ”
Race week activities will take place at the Cintermex convention centre. It includes the fun Ford GFNY Monterrey warm up group ride on Saturday in Huasteca where riders get to do a relaxed ride together with friends and competitors.
The first part of the race is mostly flat combined with some rolling hills, initially through the heart of Monterrey on fully closed roads. The main challenge of the day will be the final climb to the finish on top of iconic Chipinque which is a natural reserve and fully closed to GFNY racers. It has an average gradient of 6% and is peaking at a whopping 19%.

The French resort Villard-de-Lans in Vercors National Park offered ideal racing conditions
New York City, May 31, 2022 – Villard-de-Lans, located in the Southeast of France in the mountainous Vercors region at an altitude of 1050m, hosted the GFNY European Championship 2022 this past Sunday. The championship-worthy racecourse was 163.4 km long with almost 4000m of climbing.
Col de la Croix Perrin was the first obstacle of the day and it split the peloton into several groups with the lead group consisting of 15 riders. At the Station de Font d’Urle, the second climb of the race, 2021 GFNY Alpes Vaujany champion Kenny Nijssen (Netherlands) as well as French riders Martin Louison, Cyril Gaillard and Julien Berard managed to escape from the main group.
With 30km left to go, David Polveroni (France) was able to bridge to the group just before Col d´Herbouilly. At the bottom of the climb, Nijssen put in an attack that the others couldn’t match. He crossed the finish first at the Côte 2000 ski station in 4:43:09h. It’s the same spot where Lennard Kämna took stage 16 of the 2020 Tour de France.
Louison followed in 4:44:58 with Polveroni another two minutes back while Gaillard lost the chance to be on the podium due to a mechanical problem on the final descent.
The women’s race was dominated yet again by French Marine Quiniou who won both GFNY’s in Vaujany in 2021. Whether it was on L’Alpe d’Huez or over the legendary Col de la Croix de Fer and Col du Glandon, the climbing specialist was unstoppable last year. And she took the Vercors climbs with the same ease to win in a time of 5:58:17, 22 minutes ahead of Dutch Rochelle Verhagen (6:21:55). Third place went to compatriot Marie Boulogne.
“Villard-de-Lans has been an incredible host for our GFNY European Championship,” said GFNY France Race Director Cedric Haas. “The Vercors is a magnificent playground for cyclists and having a host town experienced in holding Olympic Games competitions and Tour de France stages is invaluable. We’re already looking forward to being back in Villard-de-Lans on May 28, 2023 for the second edition.”
Next up on the GFNY calendar is GFNY Monterrey on June 5, 2022.

The French host town of Olympic Games and Tour de France stages is receiving GFNY with open arms
GFNY Villard de Lans, located in the Southeast of France in the mountainous Vercors region at an altitude of 1050m, is hosting the GFNY European Championship 2022 race season. The championship worthy racecourse is 163,4 km long with 3973m of climbing.
“Villard de Lans has reached out to GFNY in pursuit of hosting the GFNY Europe Championship” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme.
“From the first contact, it has been an absolute pleasure to work with their team. It’s clear that they love their town and know how to host large sporting events, including no less than the two of the three largest: the Olympic Games and the Tour de France.”
Race week activities take place at Le Balcon de Villards. On Sunday, riders will take on curvy and fun roads with exceptional panoramas. These 19th century routes have made Villard de Lans and the Vercors famous: they are cut out of the cliffside, along imposing limestone escarpments and through green valleys. Riders tackle major climbs, including Col de la Croix Perrin, and the final climb to Villard de Lans has been featured several times at the Tour de France.

Samantha Arnaudo and Luca Vergallito take the GFNY crown to Italy
NEW YORK CITY, May 17, 2022 – The 10th GFNY World Championship NYC remains world’s most international cycling race and the largest cycling race west of Europe. The anniversary edition had 6500 riders from over 90 countries registered for the race. And after 103 miles with 8500 feet of climbing were battled out on the roads of New York and New Jersey, the crown went to two riders from Italy.
MALE RACE
The start of the Championship is always fast but it wasn’t until the climb at Alpine Hill that Italian Fortunato Ferrara, GFNY Santa Fe champion, attacked and was soon joined by Americans Conor Pulvidente and Nick Wheatley-Schaller as the race turned onto route 9W. By the time the trio approached Bear Mountain at mile 40, a large pack of 60 racers was nearly five minutes behind.
Wheatley-Schaller suffered the fate of so many other ambitious riders, cracking on the ascent of Bear Mountain. Ferrara topped Bear first, and Pulvidente fell back, but the chase group of thirteen was getting closer. On the way to Gate Hill at mile 60, it was just Ferrara braving it alone in front, with the ravenous pack bearing down only two minutes behind.
At the approach to Cheesecote at mile 65, two other Italians, Luca Vergallito of Officine Mattio Cycling Club and Swatt Club’s Mattia Gaffuri, launched off the front of the chase group, eventually joining their compatriot near the Pomona Aid Station. Both youngsters just come off a career as young pros with Giro d’Italia U23 under their wings. The trio worked together until the NY/NJ State Line Climb, when Ferrera’s valiant earlier blitz finally caught up with him.
It was down to the final two, as Vergallito and Gaffuri sped back up River Road. The chasing group couldn’t get organized, watching their chances fade as the two Italians kept up the furious pace.
With 150m to go on Fort Lee’s Hudson Terrace, Gaffuri opened the side by side uphill sprint but it was Vergallito who had more left in the legs and took the GFNY World Championship crown in 4:17:52.
GFNY Chile Champion Adrian Alvarado Teneb snatched third from a fading Ferrara, three minutes behind the winner.
With Francesco De Candido Romole in fifth, Matteo Draperi in ninth and 2017 champ Ricardo Ricco in eleventh, Italy had a whopping 6 riders in the top 11.
Omar Azzem dominated the GFNY races in his home Uruguay and showed with his sixth place that he was no fluke, winning the sprint against Felipe Aros Plaza of the neighboring Chile.
Camilo Salazar of Ruta 56 was best Colombian in “only” 8th place, surely a disappointment for his country, representing with over 800 riders and always in top spots at the championship. But the Colombians didn’t miss a beat and celebrated the race like no other at the GFNY Finish Village.
GFNY’s own Flavio de Luna (Mexico) rode aggressively all day but – in his own words – “ran out of gas” at the end, not having trained enough or raced at all yet this year. A 10th place is impressive, considering he worked all weekend for the GFNY video production.
Nick Wheatly Schaller was first American in 16th place. He raced offensively and showed himself out there with a great early performance. This should spur more of his compatriots to put the stars ‘n’ stripes further up in the mix for the 2023 championship crown.
FEMALE RACE
Defending champion Jill Patterson had been busy racing GFNYs on several continents, bringing home a win from Ecuador and several podium finishes. If a rider wanted the 2022 crown, she first had to take it from her.
And so Italian Samantha Arnaudo (OM.CC) did, leading the race start to finish in dominating fashion and crossing the line in 4:42:24. In second was German pro Hannah Fandel, three minutes back. Patterson rounded out a world class podium in 4:47:38.
Ecuadorian pro Daniela Zambrano came in fourth, with Arnaudo’s teammate Silvia Visaggi in fifth. Lorena Vargas was first Colombian in sixth ahead of the experienced racers Marcia Barrios (Venezuela) and Paolina Allan (Canada).
RACE DAY COVERAGE
The GFNY LIVE coverage in English and Spanish drew in 100,000 viewers who had the opportunity to comment on the race action and ask the commentator teams questions.
ENSURING A FAIR RACE
Top finishers were guided to the antidoping control by USADA as soon as they finished. Race Director Uli Fluhme conducted checks for motors on bikes of the top finishers. No motor was found.

Professional, elite and 5000 weekend warriors from over 90 countries set to race the GFNY World Championship from George Washington Bridge in New York City
NEW YORK CITY, May 10, 2022 – The 10th GFNY World Championship NYC represents the pinnacle of GFNY Endurance Sports Series and its 37 races in 2022.
GFNY is where everyone gets to Be a Pro For a Day®. On Sunday, May 15, riders will take on a challenging 100-mile route with 8,500 feet of climbing starting on the iconic George Washington Bridge at 7 a.m. and wind along the course in New Jersey and New York State that extends up to New York’s Bear Mountain State Park, with the finish line in Fort Lee, NJ.
20% of the field takes on the non-competitive 50-mile GFNY BEAR, a test that many riders use as a stepping-stone for tackling the GFNY 100 the following year.
“This year’s race for the GFNY World Championship crown is set to be the most competitive in GFNY’s 12-year history,” said Uli Fluhme, CEO of GFNY. “Several pros and elite riders from around the world and a host of local elite teams will make this Sunday a very exciting day of racing. Being able to offer a live broadcast at gfny.com will make sure anyone can follow the show.”
For the 10th edition of the GFNY World Championship, more riders than ever are registered to race. The ever expanding GFNY World calendar which now consists of almost 40 races per year, means that GFNY champions from all corners of the globe are keen to show their prowess and are ready to take the world championship crown.
Female race
Defending champion Jill Patterson (USA) has been busy racing GFNYs on several continents, bringing home a win from GFNY Ecuador and several podium finishes.
German pro Hannah Fandel dominated the 2020 GFNY Europe Championship on the legendary French Col de la Croix de Fer and is ready to get her climbing legs on at Bear Mountain and the feared hills after that.
2021 and 2022 North America Champions Ana Maria Hernandez Delgado (MEX) and Alejandra Echeverri (USA) may have won on the flat Florida and Cozumel courses but are no slouches on lumpier courses either.
Male Race
2017 GFNY World Champion and 2018 & 2019 runner-up Ricardo Pichetta (Italy), returns to NYC and might well be the man to beat for the GFNY World Championship crown.
Another Italian to look out for will be Francesco Manuel Bongiorno who just last year ended his 10-year career as a pro in teams such as Bardiani and Neri Sottoli. With a pedigree of four Giro d’Italia finishes and several top 10s in semi classics like Tre Valli Varesine, Coppi-Bartali and GP Larciano, he sure knows his way around any course thrown at him.
But no GFNY is won easily when Luis Enrique Lemus Davila is in the field. The former World Tour pro, Mexican champion and yes, 2016 Olympian is a fighter and offensive rider. Working at the pre-race expo in his role as GFNY Gruppo show host will be rough on his legs but he’ll use his experience to make it forget as soon as the gun goes off.
Flavio de Luna is another Mexican to watch. He is a staple in the GFNY peloton, has won several GFNYs in the past and is keen to finally turn yet another hard attack at GFNY NYC into a win.
2-time GFNY Florida champion Leon Santamaria (Colombia) finally gets his chance to show that he’s not just a rider for flat and fast Floridian racing but also punchy climbs.
Argentinian pro Omar Salim Azzem has shown at GFNYs in Uruguay who’s the boss in Southern LatAm. We’re keen to see how he fares against the stacked field of the GFNY World Championship.
There are lots of national and international top riders keen to win – but they first have to get past the NYC locals led by Ben Gorodetsky (CRCA/Blue Ribbon Cycling). Locals know best how to navigate the tricky GFNY World Championship course and will use that to their advantage.
RACE DAY COVERAGE
A professional crew is working to deliver a high-level race day broadcast starting at 6am ET on GFNY.COM, Facebook and Youtube. Four fixed and four moto cameras will be running to capture the race and bring the action to fans around the world.
ENSURING A FAIR RACE
Since 2012, GFNY administers in- and out of competition doping controls that ensure a fair competition. GFNY was the first mass participation event to hold out-of-competition controls (=not on race day). These controls are critical to serve the element of surprise.
GFNY will also conduct checks for motors on bikes at the start and have a parc ferme at the finish to test bikes of the top finishers.
GFNY WELCOME ZONE
The GFNY Welcome Zone & Café will serve as a gathering place for riders before or after a ride on the GFNY course during GFNY Race Week. It will be open from Wednesday, May 11 to Saturday, May 14 from 8am – 3pm each day at the GFNY Finish Village in Fort Lee (PIP Park, Fort Lee NJ).
The GFNY Café and Welcome Zone will also be open on race day, Sunday, May 15 from 8am – 7pm to welcome spectators, and families and friends of GFNY cyclists.
NYC BIKE EXPO
The tenth New York City Bike Expo is also held in PIP Park Fort Lee, NJ from May 13-14, 2022, opening hours are 10am – 6.30pm.
GFNY World events, GFNY Apparel shop, GFNY Sunglasses, GFNY Watches, race sponsors and other vendors will be on hand to showcase their latest offerings. The expo is a stand-alone event organized by GFNY that is open to the public and draws over 10,000 visitors.
GFNY CYCLING APPAREL

GFNY HELMETS
The GFNY helmet “Air” is a brand new addition to GFNY’s offering. The “Air” is following the proprietary SLVS concept: safe, lightweight, ventilated and stylish.
While easily surpassing all major safety standards, it remains at a low weight of under 250g for the US version and under 210g for the EU version so riders benefit from the “barely there” feel.
Its name “air” is no coincidence: large ventilation holes provide necessary cooling in hot weather. Lastly, the contemporary style and choice between black or white completes any rider’s outfit.
GFNY SUNGLASSES
GFNY Sunglasses are 100% Made in Italy, handcrafted with every detail and technical innovation in mind. GFNY Sunglasses are available with mirrored, dark, photochromic and clear lenses in various colors with matching frames that are entirely interchangeable.
GFNY WATCHES
After two years of development, GFNY is launching the automatic watch made specifically for bike racing: GFNY Passista Professional 300 in titanium, hardened with Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) and a Swiss movement with Incabloc shock resistance.
Meanwhile the GFNY Passista 200 in steel is your daily all-rounder watch, from shower to office to after work drinks. Made in the same shape as the Passista Professional 300, the Passista 200 comes with different specs that make it stand out in your daily life.
GFNY 3x AND 10x MEDALS
GFNY now offers two types of Multi-Finisher medals. The first is a ‘3-timer 2022’ medal that awards riders who finish three GFNYs in 2022.
The second is an “All-Time” medal that awards riders who have accumulated 10, 20, 30, and 40 GFNY finishes, ever. Each medal has a letter of GFNY and upon completing 40 GFNYs, a rider can complete the set of G-F-N-Y. The multi-medal series also contains GFNY’s slogan: “Be a Pro For a Day”.
GFNY COFFEE
GFNY Coffee is made only with 100% prime grade pure Colombian beans, roasted, and steel cut ground in a way that honors Colombia’s rich coffee heritage. GFNY Coffee will be available for purchase and to try at the NYC Bike Expo and at the GFNY Welcome Zone.
GFNY RIDER TECH PLATFORM
The GFNY technology platform with rider accounts allows riders to create or claim their GFNY account, see past GFNY results, and check progress to multi-finisher medals like the 10x medal or the 3×2018 medal. They can also check qualification status for the front corrals at GFNYs and register for any and every GFNY World race. Registration is available in 30 languages.
