Scheduled for September 19, 2021, GFNY Santa Fe is back after its Covid hiatus

NEW YORK CITY, March 11, 2021 – GFNY Santa Fe returns to the GFNY World racing calendar after its Covid induced hiatus in 2020. This September, riders get to race the challenging 75-mile high-altitude course with 7,150 feet of climbing and a peak elevation of 10,350 feet at the finish high atop Santa Fe.

Race Director Michael McCalla is thrilled to be back for a second edition. “It’s an honor to return to New Mexico with a first-class cycling event that showcases some of the best of my home state. The event highlights both the geographical and cultural diversity that makes the southwest such a special place.”

“The course transitions from the open plains and high desert to the dense pine, fir, aspen and spruce forests of the high mountains. We’ll have a post-race “block-party” which will showcase our New Mexican cuisine and local microbrews.”

Executive Director Randy Randall of TOURISM Santa Fe adds: “We’re excited to be able to welcome back GFNY to our beautiful town. Santa Fe’s location at the foot of the southern Rockies, and mild four-season climate with more than 300 days of sunshine annually, help make it a world-class city for outdoor recreation.”

GFNY Santa Fe is one of the currently rare opportunities on American soil for riders to actually race a long-distance cycling marathon with roads closed or traffic moderated by police. But while GFNY Santa Fe is the first GFNY outside New York, it’s far from the last. GFNY Florida was added in 2020 and more GFNYs are to follow.

“We’ve been working hard this past year to connect with tourism boards and governments across the country to grow GFNY across the US,” GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme adds. “The feedback has been amazing. Many see the current boom in cycling and know that events will come back – and stronger. I can’t wait to share the new GFNY race locations for the second half of 2021 and all of 2022.”

More info and registration for GFNY Santa Fe are available at santafe.gfny.com.

We know how tough it is to stay in top shape when the days are short, the roads are slushy, and the food and drink are abundant, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to improve your race performance (permanently) during the holiday season. Here are a few tips that could make a huge difference in your 2020 results:
  1. Get “slippery”! A small difference in your rider position can make a big difference in your speed out on the road. Around 80% of a cyclist’s power goes into pushing wind out of the way on a flat road, so the importance of being aerodynamic can’t be overstated. A simple change in position that reduces your wind drag could make a bigger difference in your speed than becoming 10% stronger. The key is to find a position that is still comfortable, and doesn’t cut into your power output too much. Working on core strength and flexibility, as well as some practice riding in the new position, can help make a more aggressive posture much more comfortable and sustainable. To do a simple assessment of your position have somebody take a picture of you riding on a trainer, and compare yourself to video of a professional cyclists. Use a powermeter to ensure you can maintain the same power with a new position, and also to see if the new position is making you faster. Don’t neglect to practice riding on the drops as well, just changing your hand position from the brake hoods to the drops can be worth 1-2 mph, without so much as turning a wrench or spending a penny.
  2. Learn the game! You can do this without even putting down the eggnog. A great read is Thomas Prehn’s 2004 book, “Racing Tactics for Cyclists”. This book will give you the tools to improve your game, and explains how to play your cards just right to get the best performance from your fitness level. Rehearse these tactics mentally so that you can put them to practice out on the road. Reading a race well and positioning yourself correctly in the pack can make a huge difference in your race performance. This will help you to finish much farther up in the pack in most any race regardless of your training status.

  1. ¡Aprende a deslizarte! .

GFNY Podcast: Mailbag Special

This week on the GFNY Podcast, your hosts Chris Geiser and Christian Parrett took listener questions and broke them down.

In Part 1, they discussed the specifics of big-gear training. This is a topic that’s been brought up on the podcast before, but in this episode, Christian broke down exactly how he incorporates it: what cadence, what length of interval, and at white time during the season. Listen Here.

In Part 2, they responded to a question on correctly setting FTP. Christian discussed how you can go wrong if you set your FTP and zones incorrectly, and one of the easiest ways to get your FTP set correctly. Listen Here.

In Part 3, they discuss racing at altitude, specifically the moderately high altitudes of races like GFNY Vaujany and Santa Fe. Do you need to acclimate for these races? What’s the simplest way to take on high altitude and long climbs? Listen Here.

And as always, remember that GFNY Coaching is available wherever you prefer to listen:

Performance Testing to Track Improvement

This week in the Training Guide, Coach Christian talks about simple performance testing to monitor improvements.

A good training program should be built on hard data and evidence. One of the most important sets of data points you can have as a cyclist is testing data to track your performance over time. You want to know your training is working, you want to know if it’s not working, and you also want to be able to look back and see how you’ve progressed as an athlete over time.

Yet, I’ve come to realize many athletes don’t have a solid, repeatable performance test that they use to measure their form. These tests don’t need to be complicated: yes, lab data or complicated power testing protocols have their place. But today, we’re going to suggest some simple performance tests that anyone can do multiple times during the season to track their progress.

Power Testing

If you have a power meter or a smart trainer, the best combination of simplicity, repeatability and useful data is to simply do a long, well-paced time trial effort every time you want to test your form.

Twenty minute tests are most common, and I think these are fine for most athletes (note: please don’t calculate your FTP by using this number and multiplying by .95, but we can get into that another day).

The most important thing is to always repeat the test under similar conditions: if you use a hill, always use the same or a similar hill. If you use your trainer once, use it always. If you use a flat road, continue using a flat road.

Power output can vary given terrain, so trying to compare an indoor test to an outdoor uphill test is foolish. You’ll only get bad data and trick yourself into seeing improvement when there is none.

Even if you don’t own a power meter, you may have some options for power testing. Many areas have cycling gyms or studios which have smart trainers that measure power output: consider booking a session every 6-12 weeks at one of these to do your testing in an accurate, repeatable way.

Hill-Climb Testing

If you don’t have a power meter, the next best thing is a hill-climb test. This is an age-old practice: if you go to any town where lots of pro riders live, you’ll find there’s a local testing climb where everyone goes to check their form. Monte Serra in Lucca, La Madone on the Cote d’azur, or Rocacorba in Girona are all examples of climbs that are famous not for their use in races, but for being famous test climbs.

If you don’t have a power meter and are using a hill, you can be a bit more flexible with time: ideally a 20-30 minute climb is perfect, but if you only have shorter climbs available, something as short as 10 minutes is fine. I would suggest not going below 10 minutes as the anaerobic contribution starts to become too great.

For outdoor testing, it’s even more important to guarantee similar conditions: when you do a test track the clothing you wore, bottles you carried, and atmospheric conditions that day. Avoid especially windy days that will give you bad data.

Flat TT Testing

The last option for any cyclist should be tracking improvement on a flat TT course. This is suitable if you don’t have a power meter or a local climb to test on, but it’s not ideal.

For flat TT testing, you should choose a loop or an out-and-back to help eliminate the effects of wind. A 20-30 minute course is ideal.

With flat TT testing it’s really important to try to match atmospheric conditions: go on days with low wind-speed and similar conditions to your last test.

If you live somewhere with cold winters, you’ll go slower in winter due to baggier clothes and higher air density. Because of that, you may have to compare tests by time of year: compare winter tests to winter tests, and summer tests to summer tests. You’ll also need far larger improvements to be confident that you’ve actually gotten faster and didn’t just have faster conditions.

Conclusion

The goal with performance testing is to track improvement over time and make sure your training plan is working. Otherwise, you’re only going by feel, and have no real idea if what you’re doing is working.

There’s a number of ways to test, as we’ve laid out above, but it’s worth doing your best to seek out power testing or using a long climb. Flat TT testing should be a last option.

Be sure to record your test data somewhere where you won’t lose it. Training Peaks or Strava is a great way to do this. Include important data so that you can repeat the test under the same or similar conditions.
