3rd GFNY Marathon Florida Sebring and 4th GFNY Florida Sebring cycling race took place last Sunday

GFNY Marathon Florida Sebring

The 3rd GFNY Marathon Florida Sebring offered runners a full and half marathon.  Start and finish took place at the Barn at Paso Fino. 

In the marathon, Blair Hastings (United Kingdom) took the win in 03:02:06 under the Floridian sun, followed by Ecuadorian Pablo Quiroz and Aldo Ponce (USA).  In the women’s marathon, Jennifer Loza (USA) dominated in 03:29:21 ahead of Brazilians Vivian Sanchez and Maria de Fa Oliveira.

GFNY Florida Sebring cycling race

The 95-mile cycling long course of the 4th GFNY Florida Sebring makes the race Florida’s hardest bike race. 

A peloton of close to 100 riders stuck together through the first of two loops but at the opening of the second loop, attacks made the race hard and fast. After hectic and aggressive racing for ten minutes with a strung out peloton, four riders got away. Former Olympian and ex-pro Luis Lemus (Team GFNY/Mexico) was the one who seemed the most keen to make a break. After flattening at GFNY Sebring last year, he was determined to take the win this time.

The four were soon joined by four more riders. The lead group consisted of Lemus, Gary Hand and David Lines (both Team Espresso Cycling/UK), Jonatan Ogando and Lucas Zuleta (both Team Thirsty/Ecuador), Edwin Morel (Team Talent Cycles/USA) and GFNY Puerto Rico champion Felipe Aros (Chile). They worked together well and quickly created a gap of over five minutes with the peloton seemingly giving up hope for a podium result. 

With 20 miles to go, those in the lead group not as confident in their sprint tried to get away – to no avail. In the eight man sprint to the finish line, Ogando took the win in 3:37:22 followed by Morel and Lemus.

The female race was decided within the mass sprint of the 55 rider peloton: Yennifer Torres (Team Miami Sprint Cycling/USA) won in 3:44:40, followed by Yury Beltran (Team OMG/USA) and Debora Finger (Brazil).

The Swiss bike brand collaborates with GFNY in the US to showcase its products to GFNY riders

New York City, October 20, 2023 – BMC and GFNY are working together in 2024 to showcase their bikes to riders at races such as GFNY NYC, GFNY Miami, GFNY Sebring, GFNY Maryland Cambridge, and more. 

“I’ve been familiar with GFNY for quite some time and have participated in  their flagship event in New York City,” remarks Joan Hanscom, BMC USA’s North American Marketing Manager. “I’m excited that 2024 provides us the opportunity to creatively present our bikes to the GFNY audience.”

GFNY’s Gruppo social media team and YouTube show hosts will present BMC road bikes – including the Teammachine and Roadmachine –  across GFNY’s platforms. Gruppo’s pro rider, Flavio de Luna, will race the UCI 1.2 pro race Gran Premio New York City as part of “Team GFNY” on a BMC. 

Participants who race any GFNY USA on a BMC, will benefit from a BMC Special Corral. And BMC ambassadors will hold pre-race group rides at select GFNYs and participate in the races.

GFNY Marathon Florida Sebring

The 3rd GFNY Marathon Florida Sebring offers runners a full and half marathon.  Start and finish take place at the Barn at Paso Fino. The course is flat and lightning fast. It is a USATF measured course and as such not only a Boston and NYC qualifier but also a chance for runners to qualify for the Wanda World Marathon Majors Age Group World Championship at the Chicago Marathon 2024.

GFNY Florida Sebring

The 4th GFNY Florida Sebring offers riders from across the US and 50+ countries a flat and fast 95-mile cycling long course. The main challenges are length and race speed, making GFNY Sebring the hardest race in Florida. From the Barn at Paso Fino the race enters the closed to traffic Highway Route 66. Five miles later, riders enter a two loop course into Highlands and Hardee Counties. 

GFNY Florida Sebring is a qualifier for the 2024 GFNY World Championship in NYC.

Cristian Lazzari and Erika Soares win

New York City, October 18, 2023 – Bento Gonçalves, located in the heart of Brazil´s Sierra Gaúcha, hosted the 2nd edition of GFNY Bento Gonçalves, this past Sunday.  The racecourse was 135.9km long with a tough 2721m of climbing.

A group including GFNY Bento 2022 champion and pro Alex Ferreira de Melo as well as Cristian Lazzari (Team Specialized) dominated the race. During the final 12 km climb, Lazzari and Melo put in an attack the others could not match.  In the two man sprint to the finish line, Lazzari took the win in 03:55:41.  Marcelo Vinicius rounded out the all Brazil podium. 

In the female race, last year´s GFNY Bento Gonçalves champ Erika Soares (Team Trek) repeated in a solo effort (4:21:52), ahead of Ruti Reis and Paula Sune who closed the all Brazilian podium.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is the GFNY Florida Sebring endurance sports weekend with the 3rd edition of GFNY Marathon Florida Sebring on Saturday October 21 and the fourth edition of GFNY Florida Sebring cycling on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

Riders will tackle almost 3000 m of climbing in Brazil’s Sierra Gaúcha

New York City, October 12, 2023 –  Bento Gonçalves, located in the heart of Brazil’s wine region, will host the 2nd edition of GFNY Bento Gonçalves, where riders will tackle a 135.9km long racecourse with 2721m of climbing.

“GFNY has been popular with Brazilians since its inception so having a great GFNY race locally is a no-brainer,” says GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “And it’s a proper challenge in Southern Brazil’s spring which is perfect for racing. We look forward to the Brazilian champions and competitors to join us again in NYC for the GFNY World Championship on May 19.”

Race week activities will take place in Fundaparque Rio Grande do Sul.  It includes the fun GFNY Bento group ride on Friday and Saturday where riders get to do a relaxed ride together with friends and competitors and GFNY Kids Bento which will take place on Saturday.

Inaugural edition of GFNY Cambridge Maryland and 2nd edition of GFNY Zapopan took place last Sunday

GFNY Cambridge Maryland (USA)

New York City, October 6, 2023 – Cambridge hosted the inaugural edition of GFNY Maryland this past Sunday.  The race course was a 92.4 mile long course with only 481 ft of climbing.

As early as at mile 9 two riders managed to escape the main group: ex-pro and second at the GFNY World Championship in 2013 Canadian Bruce Bird and Luke Steelman (USA). Together they extended the gap to 4:20 minutes which proved decisive.  It was at mile 75 when Bird put in an attack and successfully got away from Steelman.  He took the solo win in 3:31:01, followed by Espresso Cycle Coaching teammates Steelman and Gary Hand (United Kingdom). 

The female race was decided in a stellar 55 rider sprint where GFNY York Champion and former GFNY World Champion Jill Patterson (USA) won in 3:37:36, followed by country women July Calderon and Kai Luigend. 

GFNY Zapopan (Mexico)

Over 1000 racers competed at the 2nd edition of GFNY Zapopan. The race was held on a 124.5 km long competitive course with an elevation gain of 877m. 

In the six man sprint finish, Alejandro Madueño (Mexico) took the overall win in 2:41:15, followed by team mate Salvador Lemus (Mexico) of Team Transportes Lain-Venados. Third place went to continental pro Bernardo Suaza (Colombia) of Team Petrolike. 

Meanwhile Petrolike took first in the team competition thanks to the 6th, 7th and 8th of Suaza’s teammates. But it was a tight race: the four Petrolike racers were just 20s faster in combined time than the Transportes Lain-Venads squad which took 1st, 2nd, 9th and 13th.  

In the women’s race, Annet Barrera took the sprint finish win ahead of Marcela Prieto and Valeria Cruz, who completed the all Mexican podium.

Inaugural edition of GFNY Cambridge Maryland and 2nd edition of GFNY Zapopan will take place this Sunday

GFNY Cambridge Maryland (USA)

The inaugural edition of GFNY Cambridge Maryland starts in the heart of Cambridge downtown and offers racers a 92.4 mile long course with 481 ft of climbing, making it the flattest and likely fastest race of the GFNY circuit. It’s Maryland’s first ever mass participation cycling race. The course will take riders along Dorchester County, a place of natural unspoiled beauty, including beautiful views of Chesapeake Bay coastline.

The 2nd edition of GFNY Zapopan offers riders a 124.5 km long with an elevation gain of 877m with a start and finish at Estadio Akron. The course will take riders along the JVC Circuit onto the Guadalajara Tepic Freeway and then through Guadalajara’s historical center, making it an exciting big city race experience on closed to traffic city roads that are usually inaccessible to riders.

Nicolas Cabrera and Dominique Lavanchy win the fifth edition

New York City, September 27, 2023 – Viña Veramonte hosted the 5th edition of GFNY Chile this past Sunday.  The race course was 127.9km long with 1832m of climbing.

The race started off fast and right from the beginning at km 6, Eyair Astudillo (Chile) took the lead.   The chase group including Ricardo Paredes, Nicolás Cabrera, third place finisher from 2022 Benjamin De Vicente and Claudio Alvarez, all Chilean, managed to close the gap at km 60.

During the infamous Muro de Tunquen climb, a grueling 27% steep wall, attacks started. Ultimately, it was Cabrera who executed an unexpected late-race surge during the final sprint to the line.  Clinching first place, he clocked in at 03:26:45, a significant improvement over his 10th place finish in the 2022 edition of the race. Paredes and De Vicente followed, securing the 2nd and 3rd spots respectively.

In the female race, Dominique Lavanchy took the win in 4:14:17, ahead of Keyni Urbina and Maria Elena Parra.

The GFNY racing calendar continues to unfold, with the debut of GFNY Maryland Cambridge (USA) and the 2nd edition of GFNY Zapopan (Mexico) scheduled for  Sunday, October 1, 2023.
