World’s largest cycling marathon brand, GFNY, announces its biggest event calendar ever for 2023

NEW YORK CITY, December 14, 2022 – GFNY, the Global Endurance Sports Series, announces 32 races for 2023, more than ever held by GFNY in a single year.

Races include the 11th annual edition of the GFNY World Championship in NYC on May 21, six races in France, three in Mexico, a second race in Colombia, GFNY’s first races in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, Sweden, Thailand, near Chicago, near Washington DC, and many more.

What is GFNY

GFNY is a personal endurance challenge where athletes compete against others, the clock, and themselves. Some athletes will compete for the podium, some to earn their GFNY Elite Qualification, others to finish in their goal time, and others to beat the cut-off. GFNY is about doing one’s best.

GFNY events provide athletes this personal challenge in exciting tourism destinations around the world. All GFNY events provide athletes the opportunity to BE A PRO FOR A DAY® :

  • Mass start.
  • Individual chip timing from start to finish with awards for all categories.
  • Closed roads or police moderated traffic that ensures athletes don’t have to stop during the race.

GFNY: physical and mental health

Hosting a GFNY is not merely about getting the “right” tourists. It’s about physical and mental well being which makes GFNY attractive for the immediate constituents of governments. Post pandemic, governments like the City of Quito, Ecuador’s capital, double down on healthy outdoor sports activity by supporting not just a GFNY Quito Cycling but also the GFNY Quito Running Marathon & Half Marathon.

What GFNY is today is the result of the work we put in during the pandemic,” says GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “We connected with over 200 government agencies to bring GFNY and GFNY riders to their region. As a result we have 15 new races within two years to show for – and more in the pipeline.”

A GFNY near every rider in the world

GFNY’s goal has always been to bring a GFNY race near every rider in the world. Before GFNY’s founding in 2010, very few riders had close-by access to a mass participation cycling race where every rider can get the chance to BE A PRO FOR A DAY ®.

In less than five years, GFNY created a landscape of mass participation races for riders across the Americas, spearheading the growth across the two continents.

With our new races in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Krabi, Thailand, we’re finally expanding GFNY’s footprint in Asia. There are more GFNY races to come in Asia in 2023, which add to GFNY’s success story in Indonesia with Bali, Lombok and Sumatra,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “It’s our goal to mirror in Asia what we have been able to do in the Americas.”

GFNY World Championship New York City

NYC is the world’s capital city and provides a world-class backdrop and puts the sport of cycling and its athletes on the world stage. GFNY NYC is the Mecca of GFNY and the pillar of the series. This globally-renowned event has a fanatical participant base that travels to NYC from over 90 countries each year, making it the most international cycling event in the world.

GFNY NYC provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience to line up on the world’s busiest bridge, the George Washington Bridge, which is closed to cars, creating cycling’s most exciting cycling race start line in the world. With views of midtown Manhattan skyscrapers and the serene nature to the north, the start corrals on the George Washington Bridge are comprised of professional cyclists, Olympians, a variety of special guests like actors, musicians, sports stars and other celebrities, and 5000 athletes from all walks of life who are taking on the 100-mile (160km) challenging course from New York City, through Bergen County, NJ and Rockland County, NY and finishing in Fort Lee, NJ.

The race starts on the George Washington Bridge, but each athlete’s journey begins long before that. GFNY NYC’s 10-hour long live broadcast is cycling’s boldest live broadcast and captures the race, but also many athletes’ stories, and continues until every rider crosses the finish line. The 2022 live broadcast was available in English and Spanish, and in 2023, the broadcast will be also in French and Portuguese. Besides the live broadcast, GFNY NYC receives worldwide media attention from a wide variety of outlets: local tv and newspapers, to international cycling media and international newspapers and TV.

GFNY announces GFNY Maryland (USA)

GFNY announces GFNY Maryland
October 1, 2023

The Course

Join us at Maryland’s hardest and biggest road race! 92 miles of racing with police-moderated intersections along the entire course. Approachable medium course of 48 miles at a more casual pace. Fully stocked aid stations and mechanical and SAG van support. A finisher medal & post race meal for everyone!

GFNY Maryland race week activities take place in downtown Cambridge. You will be picking up your race packets and enjoying the post-race festivities, music, awards, and the post-race meal at the green space at Race Street & Cedar Street.

GFNY Maryland starts at the aptly-named Race Street in the heart of Cambridge’s downtown.

After leaving Cambridge, you enter Dorchester County, a place of natural, unspoiled beauty, with waterways, marshlands, farm fields, woods, and quaint small towns. Enjoy views of beautiful Chesapeake Bay coastline. Race past the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, a 27,000-acre place of striking marshlands, bald eagles, great blue herons, and more. You will also pass through the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park.

The race course is flat and fast, with occasional high winds. GFNY Maryland is GFNY’s flattest GFNY, making it fast for athletes who are working together in a peloton, but is also a very beginner-friendly course with great support along the entire course!

Long route riders repeat the loop a 2nd time before heading back to downtown Cambridge.

Long Route – 92.4 m / 481 ft+

Medium Route – 48 m / 254 ft+

About Cambridge

An authentic Chesapeake town on Maryland’s storied Eastern Shore, Cambridge has a rich maritime tradition, including shipbuilding, sailing, fishing, crabbing, waterfowling and more. With an outdoors & nature-loving culture, a rich history, charming small towns, and a slower and friendlier pace of life, Cambridge and Dorchester County offer you a wonderful opportunity for a getaway.

Cambridge is located near the metropolitan areas of Washington, DC and Baltimore, yet when you arrive to Cambridge, you’ll enjoy its small town charm. The surrounding areas include stunning nature, flora, fauna, local farms, rolling hills and ponds. Highway US-50 is known locally as the “Ocean Gateway,” with the segment running from Choptank River to Ocean City known as the “Sunburst Highway.”

Cambridge has local attractions and activities for the entire family.

GFNY announces Inaugural GFNY Maryland (USA)

Scheduled for October 1, 2023, Cambridge will host a “flat ‘n’ fast” GFNY race

GFNY Maryland is the latest addition to the GFNY Global Endurance Sports Series, making it the fourth GFNY cycling race in the USA in 2023.  Scheduled for October 1, 2023, riders compete on the flattest and likely fastest race of the GFNY circuit.

GFNY Maryland race week activities will take place in downtown Cambridge.  Located on Maryland’s storied Eastern Shore, the downtown has a rich maritime tradition, including shipbuilding, sailing, fishing, crabbing, waterfowling and more.

GFNY Cambridge Maryland is the long awaited east coast fall race in driving distance to the mother race in New York City,” says GFNY President Lidia Fluhme.

But it obviously just as much if not more so will be the “home race” for the large crowd of GFNY fans in the DC metro area. GFNY Cambridge Maryland is ideal to close out the race season – and punch that qualifying ticket for the racer corral at any GFNY for the following 380 days – including the World Championship in NYC in May.”

The course goes through Dorchester County, a place of natural unspoiled beauty with waterways, marshlands, farm fields, woods and quaint small towns.  The race will not only pass along the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, a 27,000- acre place of striking marshlands, bald eagles, great blue herons and more but also through the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historic Park.

GFNY North American Championship 2023 held in Puerto Rico

Scheduled for February 5, 2023 the Caribbean island will serve as the GFNY North American Championship

GFNY Puerto Rico offers a championship worthy 82.7 miles long course with 5086 feet of climbing with start and finish in the capital San Juan. The racecourse begins flat through Carolina but quickly turns inland on undulating roads including four distinctive climbs before heading back through Carolina to the finish in San Juan.

The 2023 GFNY Puerto Rico has all the ingredients for a championship race: a course that favors allrounders, perfect racing weather and a great excuse for riders and accompanying family and friends from colder climates for a beautiful warm weather break. Puerto Rico is a sought after travel destination for a reason,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme.

GFNY Championship races draw a larger and more competitive field due their elevated prestige and the fact that not the top 10% but 20% of finishers in each age group will gain a Qualifier Corral slot for all GFNY races for the next 380 days.

Meanwhile overall champions will be rewarded with flights to and accommodation at the 11th GFNY NYC World Championship on May 21, 2023.

The GFNY Championship races are open to anyone so riders not just from North America but just as much South America are expected to compete,” says Fluhme. “And for the more casual riders there is always the non-competitive (but timed) shorter distance at GFNY.”

FEBRUARY 5, 2023 – CONFIRMED

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

GFNY Puerto Rico serves as the GFNY North American Championship

The top 20% of finishers in each age group will start in the Qualifier Corral at all GFNYs for the next 380 days.

Overall Champions (male and female) of the GFNY North American Championship win flights, hotel and entry to GFNY World Championship NYC 2023 to compete for the GFNY World Championship crown.

The Course

GFNY Puerto Rico will have one of the most amazing routes for its panoramic views, between plains and climbs passing through the towns of Carolina, Canovanas, Juncos, San Lorenzo and Caguas.

Your departure at 7 am will be made from the Municipality of San Juan leaving from the Mall Of San Juan.

This road will take you to the Municipality of Carolina towards road PR-874 where you can appreciate a historic area with ruins of the Old Sugar Cane Mill of Canovanas. Then, the route will enter the urban area of Canovanas where the surface of the land changes from coastal plain, to the mountainous rural area.

About Puerto Rico

Discover amazing food, drinks and shops while exploring the urban side of Puerto Rico, where history and culture intersect with bustling city life.

The metropolitan area refers to seven towns that make up the urban “downtown” of Puerto Rico, including the capital, San Juan, a city with over 500 years of history, and Carolina.

What was once the crown jewel of the Spanish Empire is now the Island’s historic and cultural center, as well as the most popular launching point for Puerto Rico vacations. Founded in 1521, San Juan is the oldest European-founded city in the Americas but is home to much more than just history.

Only 15 minutes from SJU airport, San Juan blends elements of the Old World (cobblestone streets and colonial architecture) with all the amenities of modern urban life (craft cocktails, contemporary dining, amazing shopping, and vibrant nightlife). Immerse yourself in the culture and explore the wealth of art, food, adventure, and beauty that is waiting to be discovered.

GFNY Super Sunday celebrated with 3600 racers

The 9th edition of GFNY Cozumel, 4th edition of GFNY Chile and inaugural GFNY Quito closed the 2022 GFNY season

GFNY Cozumel

The 9th GFNY Cozumel offered the 2200 riders the now classic, stunning and lightning fast 157km course, making it the longest bike race in the Americas south of NYC.

20-year-old Christopher Torres took the win in 3:38:31, averaging a whopping 43km/h, followed by Juan Pablo Magallanes and former Israel Cycling Academy pro and Olympian Luis Lemus (all Mexico).

In the female race, 2019 and 2020 GFNY Cozumel champ Ana María Hernandez won in 3:50:27, followed by Montserrat Camargo who made her sixth GFNY podium and is still waiting for her first win. María Guadalupe Ríos Perez completed the all Mexican podium.

GFNY Chile

Viña Veramonte, located just outside the capital city of Santiago de Chile, hosted 700 racers at the 4th edition of GFNY Chile. The racecourse of 127.9km with an elevation gain of 1832m included the infamous 27% steep climb of Muro de Tunquen.

Francisco Kotsakis (Team Papa Johns) took the win in 3:24:01 against Adrian Alvarado (Team Velo’Z) who was third at the GFNY World Championship in NYC earlier this year and second at GFNY Chile already last year. Benjamin De Vicente (Cyclingwolf) rounded out the all Chilean podium.

In the female race, Aranza Villalon (Squadra Beretti Cycling) defended her title and took the win in 03:39:56, followed by – again like last year – Fernanda Subiabre (Maipú Cycling) and Romanet Sepulveda (PCC).

GFNY Quito

Ecuador’s capital received 900 racers for the inaugural GFNY Quito on a course touching 3000m above sea level and ending with the relentlessly steep and cobble stoned climb through the historic Guapolo neighborhood.

Yet, it took a head to head sprint to decide the male race: local athlete Andres Padilla (RideClub) took the overall win in 3:22:46, followed by José Cornejo in 3:22:59 who was already second earlier this year at GFNY Ecuador Manta. Meanwhile Francisco de la Torre (Bet endurance Team) stepped up on the podium from his 4th place in Manta.

In the female race, Adriana Morales (Alma team) took the solo win in 3:51:20, followed by the steadily improving Nicole Aguirre. Third place finisher Monse Almeida also competed in the inaugural GFNY Half Marathon Quito just two weeks earlier.
