Sprint finish at Michelob Ultra GFNY Cambridge-Maryland

Fonseca and Flynn take the win of the third edition

New York City, October 7, 2025 – The third edition of Michelob Ultra GFNY Cambridge-Maryland delivered great race action this past Sunday, as riders took on a flat and fast 92.4-mile (148.7 km) course under perfect early-autumn weather conditions on Maryland’s scenic Eastern Shore.

Right from the start, a large peloton of around 120 riders formed quickly, pushing hard over the flat roads and maintaining a high speed throughout the race. It featured strong contenders, including GFNY Maryland 2024 champion Edwin Morel (USA), multi time GFNY Champions Flavio de Luna and Luis Lemus (Mexico), as well as GFNY York 2023 runner-up finishers Steven Nino and Tabare Pichardo (both USA). At mile 46, De Luna launched a decisive and brave attack, opening up a gap of nearly three minutes.

The chase group worked together to close the gap but was eventually absorbed by the main peloton, which organized a strong pursuit. With less than 2 km to go to the finish line, the group finally caught De Luna, setting up a dramatic sprint finish.  Juan David Fonseca (Colombia) took the victory in 3:38:37, followed closely by Iván Romero (Mexico) in second place and Andy Nuñez (Dominican Republic) in third.

In the women’s race, Yuliya Flynn (Team NCVC) stayed with the main peloton throughout the race and claimed the win in 3:40:13, a whopping 21 minutes ahead of Karen Walker. Rachel Liberatore completed the all USA podium.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is Michelob Ultra GFNY Florida Sebring which will take place on October 26, 2025.

Third edition of GFNY Maryland this Sunday

Riders will tackle a flat but fast course in Cambridge

New York City, October 2, 2025 – The third edition of the Michelob Ultra GFNY Maryland–Cambridge will take place this Sunday, October 5, bringing international cyclists to the Eastern Shore.

The 92.4-mile route is designed for speed and endurance: flat and fast, with the occasional challenge of coastal winds. The course rewards strong teamwork and steady pacing. Riders will pass through Dorchester County, an area of natural, unspoiled beauty, with stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay coastline.

Michelob Ultra GFNY Maryland–Cambridge has quickly become a late season favorite for our East Coast riders,” said GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “This event wouldn’t exist without the fantastic support of the City of Cambridge and funded in part by a grant from the Michael Erin Busch Sports Fund through Maryland Sports Youth and Amateur Sports Grant Program. Thank you for appreciating the value of bringing road cyclists to the area.”

Race festivities will be centered at Cedar & Race, where riders and spectators will enjoy a weekend of cycling and community. Highlights include the popular Group Rides on Friday and Saturday, giving participants the chance to warm up, meet fellow cyclists, and experience the camaraderie that defines GFNY events.

GFNY Super Sunday in South America

7th editions of GFNY Manta and GFNY Chile took place last Sunday

GFNY Manta (Ecuador)

The 7th GFNY Manta delivered an unforgettable day of racing this past Sunday, as riders took on a challenging 115.3 km course featuring 1,632 m of climbing along Ecuador’s stunning Pacific coastline. With over 500 participants on the start line, the race showcased fierce competition, strategic racing, and impressive performances from some of the region’s top amateur cyclists.

A group of six riders quickly established the lead pack, including former champions Renzo Molineros (2022 & 2024)and Jorge Carranza (2021) as well as Vicente Mendoza, Joseph Andrade (all Ecuador). The group remained together until km 66, when a series of decisive attacks began on the El Aromo climb. Carranza and Andrade worked well together to close gaps, but during this phase Andrade received two warnings for assistance from a personal support vehicle, resulting in a 20-second penalty.

After a rapid descent approaching km 115, the race came down to a dramatic final sprint, with Andrade and Carranza crossing the line together. However, due to the time sanction, Carranza was declared the official winner. Kevin Ruiz and Joseph Andrade, completing an all-Ecuadorian podium.

The women’s race also delivered an exciting finale. Andrea Logroño took the win in 3:37:20, narrowly edging out Paolla Pullas, while Brigith Cañizares secured third place, finishing four minutes later.

GFNY Chile

The 127.9 km course featuring 1,832 m of elevation gain, offered GFNY Chile racers demanding climbs and breathtaking scenery in the heart of central Chile.

Right from the start, locals Francisco Kotsakis (2022 champion) and Tomás Quiroz launched a decisive attack, breaking away before reaching Casablanca (km 10) and quickly establishing a gap that the 15+ rider chase group could not close.

Kotsakis and Quiroz worked well together until km 60, when Kotsakis launched a powerful surge, distancing himself from Quiroz. From that point on, he tackled the demanding Gran Tunquén descent solo and conquered the steep Tunquén Wall without reducing his relentless pace, steadily extending his lead on the road to the finish line.

Kotsakis sealed a commanding victory, crossing the finish line in 3:21:36 — a full five minutes ahead of Quiroz. The fight for third place came down to a dramatic sprint from the chase group, where GFNY Chile 2024 champion Héctor Dinamarca secured the final podium position, completing an all-Chilean podium.

The women’s race was marked by an equally dominant performance from María Laura Bugarin, who delivered a remarkable solo ride to take the win in 3:53:35, finishing a whopping 24 minutes ahead of María de Solar. Karina Wistuba rounded out the podium after a strong and consistent performance.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is the third edition of Michelob Ultra GFNY Maryland–Cambridge which will take place this Sunday, October 5.

New approach mirrors successful marathon and triathlon formats, creating unprecedented fan engagement and commercial opportunities

New York City, September 11, 2025 – A groundbreaking approach to professional cycling is gaining momentum, with innovators like Swatt Club and events such as GFNY / GP NYC demonstrating how the sport can evolve beyond traditional broadcast-dependent models to create a more inclusive, participatory, and commercially viable future.

The unified racing model, which allows professional UCI teams to compete on the same course as amateur cyclists and just a few minutes ahead of them, represents cycling’s answer to the successful mass-participation formats that have revolutionized marathons and Ironman triathlons. At GP New York City, held in conjunction with the mass participation race GFNY, professional riders start just 10 minutes ahead of thousands of amateur participants, creating a shared experience that transforms spectators into active participants.

Proven Results Drive Industry Interest

This isn’t speculation – it’s already working,” said industry observers watching the model’s development. “We’re seeing UCI professional teams like Alpecin Deceuninck racing alongside development riders and elite amateurs, all on the same roads, creating stories and connections that traditional racing formats simply cannot deliver.

The approach addresses three critical challenges facing professional cycling: limited fan engagement beyond television viewership, fragmented amateur development pathways, and restricted commercial opportunities for sponsors and teams.

Commercial Revolution for Sponsors and Teams

The unified model delivers measurable advantages over traditional professional-only racing:

  • Depth of Exposure: One jersey worn by 100 riders over 100km generates 10,000+ minutes of visibility compared to fleeting TV appearances
  • Authentic Engagement: Every participant becomes a brand ambassador through social media posts, GPS uploads, and personal race stories
  • Purchase Intent: Amateur cyclists racing the same equipment as professionals creates direct emotional connections to consumer purchasing decisions

For professional teams, the model transforms them from race-day assets into lifestyle brands while providing direct access to development talent through shoulder-to-shoulder racing experiences.

UCI Benefits Without Calendar Expansion

The approach offers cycling’s governing body three strategic advantages:

  1. Revenue diversification through entry fees, merchandise, and tourism partnerships independent of broadcast rights
  2. Global talent identification allowing riders from non-traditional markets to compete against professionals without international travel
  3. Federation engagement through increased licensed participation and clearer development pathways

Scaling the Future

Events following this model are expanding globally, with GP New York City serving as a flagship demonstration of the format’s potential. The approach complements rather than competes with traditional professional racing, offering a sustainable path for sport growth.

Cycling’s next evolution isn’t about better equipment – it’s about better connection, noted format advocates. When fans become participants and amateurs race alongside professionals, we create something much more powerful than traditional spectatorship.”

The unified model represents cycling’s “marathon moment,” positioning the sport for sustainable growth through increased participation, enhanced commercial viability, and stronger community engagement.

About the Unified Racing Model

The unified racing format allows professional UCI teams and amateur cyclists to compete on identical courses during single events, typically with professionals starting minutes ahead of mass-participation fields. The model has been successfully demonstrated at events including Gran Premio New York City and continues expanding through partnerships with forward-thinking teams, sponsors, and event organizers.

Note to editors: High-resolution images from Gran Premio NYC and other unified format events are available upon request, showing professional teams and amateur participants sharing the same competitive environment.

By Chris Geiser

Change Is the Only Constant

Cycling fans are used to constant innovation: tubeless tires, disc brakes, aero helmets, electronic shifting, power meters. With every new technology, resistance follows—remember when disc brakes were seen as circular death blades? Yet these changes are now standard.

This cycle—innovation, fear, resistance, adoption—is as old as the sport. But while gear evolves rapidly, the structure of professional cycling hasn’t kept pace. The broadcast- and team-based model that once elevated the sport now holds it back, benefiting only the top tier and leaving amateur scenes fragmented and underdeveloped, especially in countries like the U.S., where cycling has struggled to build sustainable traction.

The Real Innovation Isn’t Gear

True progress now lies in rethinking the model of the sport itself. Forward-thinking groups are addressing talent development, community engagement, and fan experience—making racing participatory, not just consumable.

Swatt Club is one such pioneer, integrating pro and amateur cycling into a single experience. Inspired by GFNY’s Gran Premio NYC format, where a UCI pro field starts just ahead of a mass-start amateur race, the model delivers elite performance and personal challenge on the same stage. It’s inclusive, exhilarating, and disruptive—exactly what cycling needs.

What’s Next?

As always, change meets resistance. But the pattern is predictable: innovation → pushback → eventual adoption. This time, the innovation isn’t in carbon or ceramic—it’s in connection. And it’s already on course.

A Proven Alternative Is Emerging

Innovators like Swatt Club, following the GFNY Gran Premio NYC model, are showing what’s possible. In this format, a UCI Pro race leads out just minutes ahead of a mass-start amateur race. The result is a single-day, shared experience: world-class racing up front, community and personal challenge right behind.

  • Fan engagement becomes fan participation.
  • Sponsor exposure scales from niche broadcast to live, emotional, social-media-driven storytelling.
  • Teams gain access to talent pipelines and new activation opportunities.
  • Cities benefit from events that integrate tourism, sport, and community.

The Path Forward

Cycling’s next growth engine won’t come from incremental tech or new GC contenders. It will come from rethinking the model to be inclusive, participatory, and scalable—mirroring what works in marathons, triathlon, and mass-participation running.

The old system will resist, but the economics are clear: the current model serves only a shrinking elite. The future lies in building a bridge between pro and amateur—between racing and the people who fund, follow, and want to be part of the action.

This isn’t disruption for disruption’s sake. It’s business evolution. And it’s already underway.

Turning Spectators into Competitors to Unite Pro Cycling with Its Fans

The formula has already been proven. Marathons and Ironman triathlons have employed it for years: everyone races the same course, from world champions to first timers, resulting in not only a deeper field but a stronger sport. When the fans become participants, legends are made at all levels of the sport, on the same roads.

There has been resistance to this model in professional cycling. Locked behind physical, institutional, and commercial barriers, pro cycling exists in a different universe from elite amateurs and its overall fan base. But those barriers are eroding and the future of the sport is depending on that erosion.

One Race, One Peloton

This proposal is focused on a unified model where professionals and amateurs race together, not only for talent development, but for direct fan engagement. The same roads. The same start line. The same clock.

This is not speculative—it’s already working. At Gran Premio New York City, held in conjunction with the global GFNY, professional and amateur riders compete on the same course, on the same day – UCI rules currently don’t allow for a mass start, so for now 10 minutes separates the two fields.

The Model:

Pros Fans/Amateurs
Racing in teams for prize money and ranking points. Racing for personal bests, age group podiums, and a chance to say they went head-to-head with the best.

The Transformative Impact:

  • Fans become part of the race, not just the audience.
  • Teams gain new visibility—not just in highlight reels, but in thousands of personal race reports, selfies, and ride files.
  • Sponsors reach real athletes, not passive viewers. Their logos don’t flash by on screen—they cross the finish line on the backs of thousands of riders from 90+ countries.

Rather than diluting the sport, this model expands the reach of the sport overall by bridging the gap between pro and amateur, elite and enthusiast.

Enabling Sponsor Return on Investment: Scalable, Measurable, Relatable

Survival and growth for any sport is a symbiotic relationship with sponsors. This new model not only increases the return on investment upside for sponsors, but it enables scale and measurement in the short and long term. There are three distinct advantages for sponsors over traditional pro-only racing:

  • Depth of Exposure: One jersey worn by 100 riders over 100km = 10,000+ minutes of visibility vs. 10 seconds on TV.
  • Engagement at Scale: Every participant becomes a brand ambassador through their photos, GPS uploads, and social posts.
  • Purchase Intent: Amateurs race what they buy. Being in the same event creates an emotional link between pro performance and consumer behavior.

Streamlining Brand Visibility and Recruitment for Teams

The struggles of professional cycling teams to build long-term brand equity are well documented. Current models actually run counter to the elements that create brand equity. Short term sponsorships, and lack of a physical base have put long-term brand equity in the hands of individual riders. This model rethinks this issue to create new value streams for pro teams.

  • Brand-building: Teams become lifestyle brands, not just race-day assets. Lifestyle brands retain equity for as long as the kits are worn, the bikes are ridden, and the gear is worn.
  • Recruitment: Development riders can race shoulder-to-shoulder with the top-tier—scouting by doing.
  • Fan connection: Hosting meetups, club rides, or simply being on the same course as fans creates lifelong loyalty that no social media post can replicate.

Revenue Channels that Support the UCI

While change can always be difficult to grasp at scale, the benefits for cycling’s governing body would enable funding to scale the sport in a sustainable way. With respect to governance, this model complements—not competes with—the traditional pro calendar. In fact, it solves three major UCI pain points:

  • Revenue Growth Without Broadcast Dependency
    • Mass participation events generate entry fee revenue, merchandise sales, tourism partnerships, and sponsorships—none of which depend on TV rights or federated licensing.
  • Global Talent Identification Without Expanding the Calendar
    • Talent from non-traditional markets can race against pros without leaving their country. It’s a decentralized global scouting network—paid for by the riders.
  • Federation Buy-in and Expansion
    • National federations benefit too: more licensed riders, more local engagement, and easier recruitment into structured development pathways.

Rather than see amateur-pro integration as a dilution of elite racing, the UCI can position itself as the architect of a multi-tiered, scalable, revenue-positive ecosystem—one that extends the reach of the sport without expanding the pro calendar.

The Path Forward

Cycling doesn’t need more barriers. It needs more roads—shared roads. The unified race format has already proven itself at events like Gran Premio New York City, powered by GFNY’s global platform. Now it’s time to scale it—with the backing of visionary teams, forward-thinking sponsors, and a UCI ready to lead rather than protect the status quo.

This is cycling’s marathon moment. Everyone on the road. One sport. One peloton

The Giant King of the Wind section in Cozumel is where cyclists are truly tested. Stretching along the exposed east side of the island, this segment pits riders against relentless head- and crosswinds. It’s not just about fitness—it’s about aerodynamics, positioning, and mental toughness. This is also where aero bikes like the Giant Propel shine: every watt saved through reduced drag translates into speed and endurance. With the right strategy, you can either fight for the crown or simply set your personal best.

10 Tips to Master the King of the Wind

1. Stay Aero
Use the drops, tuck your elbows, and keep movements smooth. An aero bike plus an aero body position is your best weapon.

2. Trust Your Equipment
Deep-section wheels and aero frames slice the wind, but only if you stay relaxed and in control. Don’t let gusts push you around—ride loose, not tense.

3. Ride the Paceline
Work with others. Smooth, short pulls at the front keep the group alive. Never surge, never brake—flow is key.

4. Find the Sweet Spot
Position yourself second or third wheel back. You’ll conserve energy while staying safe from gaps if the group splits.

5. Master the Echelon
When the crosswind hits, angle off to the sheltered side of the rider in front. Don’t fight the wind alone—an echelon is survival.

6. Know When to Attack
Racers should strike from the protected side when others are tiring. Commit fully—this is no place for half-hearted moves.

7. Pace for Your Best Time
If your goal is a PR, lock into a steady cadence (85–95 RPM). Avoid power spikes that burn matches too soon.

8. Respect the Length
The section is longer than it feels. Manage your effort early so you can finish strong when the tailwind arrives.

9. Save Something for the Switch
As you curve around the island, the headwind becomes a tailwind. Shift up, open your chest, and unleash your speed.

10. Stay Mentally Sharp
The wind will test your patience and resolve. Embrace it, stay calm, and remember—every pedal stroke here makes the finish line that much sweeter.

Giant King of the Wind – Consejos y Estrategias

10 Consejos para Dominar el Giant King of the Wind

1. Mantente Aero
