The GFNY USA expansion continues with a new race in Texas

New York City, June 23, 2022 – GFNY Waco Texas offers riders a fast racecourse of 85.7 miles with a total elevation gain of 2490 ft. Located in the heartland of Texas, the host town of Waco will hold race week activities at the Hilton Waco Hotel.

“Waco is ideally located in the triangle between Dallas, Houston and Austin,  offering quiet country roads for a perfect GFNY race experience,” says GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “We couldn’t ask for a better partner than the City of Waco for GFNY’s first race in Texas.”

GFNY Waco is the third GFNY in the US in 2022 after NYC and Ann Arbor, offering a long, competitive and a medium, non-competitive course. After a start at North University Parks Drive, riders get to race through the main Blackland Prairie ecoregion with rolling hills and the Edwards Plateau savanna. High temperatures are expected to add to the challenge.

Racers from abroad and across the US are aiming for the crown, including Mexican champions Luis Lemus and Flavio De Luna as well as Miami based two time GFNY Florida champ Leon Santamaria. US cycling legend Nelson Vails will offer his experience and wheel to everyday riders to get a good finish time.

Sprint finish after 11,000ft of climbing

GFNY La Vaujany included cresting the famous L’Alpe d’Huez

New York City, June 21, 2022 –  After last week’s GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet in the Pyrenees, the GFNY peloton headed to the Alps. GFNY La Vaujany had 145.1km with 3663m of climbing including L’Alpe d’Huez on the menu.

The first obstacles of the day were Col de la Morte and Col d’Ornon. GFNY NYC runner-up Mattia Gaffuri (Italy – Solowattaggio) and last week’s GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet champ Julien Berard (France) were the most offensive riders, whittling the lead group of contenders down to seven.

During the ascent to legendary L’Alpe d’Huez,  Gaffuri took the lead, trailed by 2021 GFNY La Vaujany champ  Tim Alleman (Belgium – Grinta), less than a minute back.  After a very fast descent, Gaffuri seemed poised to take the win on the last 5km to the summit of Vaujany.

But with only 1km to go, Alleman caught up to Gaffuri. After almost 4000m of climbing, the winner was decided in a sprint in the narrow and picturesque streets of Vaujany. Alleman had the upper hand and defended his title with a time of 4:39:02. GFNY Lourdes-Tourmalet champion Berard followed in third place, three and a half minutes back.

In the female race, 2019 GFNY World Champion and 2022 GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet Champion Jill Patterson (USA) doubled down and took the win in 5:38:29,  14 minutes ahead of Sophie Herzog (Switzerland). Leah Armstrong (USA) completed the podium in a time of 6:36:00.

Next up is this Sunday’s inaugural GFNY Waco Texas: less mountains, more speed!

GFNY back at L’Alpe d’Huez

At GFNY La Vaujany, riders tackle L’Alpe d’Huez this Sunday June 19, 2022

New York City, June 16, 2022 –  After conquering the legendary Col du Tourmalet in the French Pyrenees a few days ago at GFNY Lourdes, GFNY riders get to race another iconic climb this Sunday: L’Alpe d’Huez.

GFNY La Vaujany is 145.1 km long with 3663m of climbing, including Col de la Morte, Col d’Ornon, L’Alpe d’Huez and Vaujany. The expected heat will make the bottom slopes of L’Alpe d’Huez and the climb to the finish in Vaujany particularly challenging.

Host town Vaujany is the ideal playground to make a rider’s French col fantasies come true. It’s no coincidence that the queen stage of the World Tour Race “Critérium du Dauphiné” finished in Vaujany last week. Vaujany offers all the amenities a rider and accompanying friends and family could wish for in a mountain village destination.

GFNY will already be back again in Vaujany at the end of August for the third annual GFNY Alpes Vaujany: same host town but a completely different course including the incredible Col de la Croix de Fer and Col du Glandon.

GFNY Super Sunday results

GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet and GFNY Michigan Ann Arbor took place this past Sunday, June 12

New York City, June 14, 2022 – For the inaugural edition of GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet (France) racers tackled 157km with 4064m of climbing in the legendary French Pyrenees.

Col d’Aspin was the first real obstacle of the day – and it didn’t disappoint. The peloton split into groups with the lead group consisting of five riders.  During the steepest part of the ascent to iconic Col du Tourmalet, the second mountain of the race, Julien Berard (France) pulled away from his contenders. He already scored several GFNY podiums, but this time he was poised to finally take the top spot. After a furious descent under severe storms, Berard took the win in 4:49:10. His countrymen Sebastian Pillon (Jolly Cycles) and Nicolas Capdepuy completed the podium.

In the female race, 2019 GFNY World Champion and 2022 GFNY World Championship runner-up Jill Patterson (USA) dominated. Unchallenged, she took the win in 5:46:39, beating Belgian Sarah Audenart and French Marit Faucogney.

Meanwhile across the pond, GFNY Michigan Ann Arbor provided a very different playground for the racers. The course was 162km long with just over 1000m of climbing, favoring the rouleurs in the peloton.

It was 23-year old Cat.1 racer Ben Gorodetsky from NYC (New England Devo) who took the lead as early as mile 18 – and never looked back. He won in 4:11:59, followed by Dado Slezak (Onyx Racing/USA) 2 ½ minutes back. Wojciech Komsta (Finkraft/Poland) completed the podium in 4:18:07

In the female race, it was a Canadian double with Natascha Piciga taking the win in a time of 04:53:56, followed by her countrywoman Christina Alsop.  Aleksandra Szydelko (Poland) took third, her relentless determination for GFNY and cycling paying off big time!

Next up is GFNY La Vaujany this Sunday, where GFNY riders have to tackle the legendary Alpe d’Huez climb – twice.

Sprint finish at Ford GFNY Monterrey last Sunday

Miguel Arroyo took the win in the male race while Team Pato Bike dominated female race

New York City, June 7, 2022 – A head to head sprint decided the male race at the 4th Ford GFNY Monterrey after 137km of racing with an elevation gain of 1549m and a hilltop finish on iconic Chipinque.

Under clear skies and very hot temperatures, the race started out fast on Monterrey’s city highways with speeds hitting over 60kph. After a string of attacks from the gun, it was at km 50 when a group of eight riders successfully got away from the peloton.

On the final ascent of Chipinque to the finish line, two riders took the lead, climbing at 25kph: Miguel Arroyo and Miguel Angel Herrera (both from Mexico) fought tooth and nail to shake each other.  At the end it was Arroyo who took the win in a tight sprint finish in 2:52:43. Tomas Aguirre rounded out the all Mexican podium three minutes behind the leaders.

In the female race, Team Pato Bike dominated by taking the first four spots. The team worked together until the final climb up Chipinque, where Marcela Prieto climbed the fastest to win in 3:02:23. Karen Loren Villamizar Varon and Paola Macias Estrada rounded out the team podium.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is a Super Sunday: the inaugural races GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet and GFNY Ann Arbor – Michigan take place this Sunday, June 12, 2022.
