Bali opened the 2025 GFNY season

Mitchell and Brittain win the 2025 GFNY Asian Championship

New York City, February 19, 2025 – The 6th edition of GFNY Bali took place on “The Island of the Gods” last Sunday. The racecourse covered 137.4 km with 2,230 meters of climbing.

Under ideal weather conditions, the race started from Jembatan Merah and by km 15, three distinct groups had formed.  A lead group of 11 riders emerged, and it was during the Kintamani climb that Will Mitchell of Team Matador – Singapore made a decisive break. He reached speeds of up to 92 km/h on the descents and claimed the solo victory in a time of 3:47:31, finishing eight minutes ahead of Dutch ex-pro and journalist Thijs Zonneveld (BEAT Cycling Club). Levi Wilming (also Netherlands), third already at GFNY Sweden-Uppsala, secured third place again to complete the podium.

In the women’s race, defending 2023 GFNY champion Alicia Brittain (South Africa) secured the solo win with a time of 4:47:03, finishing 21 minutes ahead of Lucy Richardson (United Kingdom). Irina Emelianova (Indonesia) rounded out the women’s podium in third place.

The 7th edition of this iconic race will take place on June 21, 2026. Entries are now available, and riders should secure their spots for this once-in-a-lifetime race on the paradise island.

Next on the GFNY calendar is a Super Sunday with 2 races scheduled for March 16, featuring the 7th edition of GFNY Punta del Este in Uruguay and the 5th edition of GFNY República Dominicana.

That the GFNY World Championships NYC (commonly known as GFNY NYC) is a gran fondo that has achieved cult status in the U.S., and certainly far beyond, is beyond question. But the fact that there is a Belgian touch to the race on May 18, 2025, is interesting.

The origin story of New York, which can be traced back to the Netherlands, is widely known. The Dutch origins of the current borough names Harlem (Haarlem) and Brooklyn (Breukelen) are easy to guess. But the fact that it was a group of Walloon families in 1624, together with the Dutch, who founded a settlement on what is now Manhattan Island (well before Belgium existed), is less well known. Except among the Belgian community in New York and one of New York’s most famous Belgian cyclists: Filip Vanden Bulcke, Consul General of Belgium….

Written by Willem Sipkema from Wieler Revue.

Tibor Del Grosso became world champion cyclo-cross this winter, but what about his win in The Big Apple last year?

The Gran Fondo New York has existed for quite some time now, but since last year it is also a pro race. Wieler Revue will travel to the Gran Premio New York next year and so we are curious about the experiences of the winner of the very first edition: Tibor del Grosso. The 21 years-old Dutchman has made some nice memories on the other side of the pond!

Willem Sipkema

Tibor del Grosso: “We asked ourselves within the team: who is going to New York in the middle of the season? Of course it’s cool to go there once, but you are four days away with two jetlags. But I am very happy that I could go. It is a cool experience to be able to race in America. It was also the first time for me. I’ve never raced outside of Europe anyway, so it was an interesting one for that reason as well.”

It was cold at the start!

“Starting on the George Washington Bridge was quite the experience. Since we started early in the morning, it was still terribly cold. The start was at 7 a.m., so we had to get on that bridge at a quarter past 6. So there we were. 60 meters above the water of the Hudson River, in the wind. I did catch a huge cold there at the time.”

“Fortunately after the start it was full gas right away so I quickly got warm again. A shorter course, but I like that. The course was very nice on paper with two tougher climbs halfway through the race. The first 15 kilometers we rode on a kind of park road which was nice. At every intersection there is a police officer directing traffic. Sometimes there is a car in the inside corner, but the peloton quickly learned that you shouldn’t take blind corners too sharply. It’s different racing than in Europe.”

Highlights of Manhattan

“On the second climb, three guys rode away and at the top I jumped in after them. So we came half way through the race with four men in front and we were working well together. We had quite a big gap and the peloton also rode wrong. They were already more than a minute behind, but that gave us some extra space. There were two guys from Lotto with us, so I had to be careful they didn’t take turns attacking. I knew I was the fastest in the sprint and then I won it comfortably.”

Del Grosso wouldn’t mind coming back this year, but his 2025 program is still not completely clear. “It was a really fun trip with the staff. The race was over by 10:30 in the morning so after that we had a nice time checking out the highlights of Manhattan.”

GFNY opens 2025 in Bali this Sunday

The “Island of the Gods” will host the sixth edition of GFNY Bali

New York City, February 13, 2025 -This Sunday, GFNY Bali, one of the world’s most beautiful and iconic destinations, will offer participants two options: a competitive long course of 137.7km with 2226m of climbing and a non-competitive medium course of 87 km.  With its stunning landscapes, challenging terrain, and rich culture, Bali offers a unique experience for cyclists seeking an unforgettable race.

“GFNY in Bali is undoubtedly one of the absolute highlights on the 30+ annual events on the GFNY calendar,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “Of course the landscape – the “playground” of this race – is just spectacular. But as always “la corsa la fanno i corridori”, the racers make the race: the Balinese and other Indonesians make the race such a special experience for anyone lucky enough to be part of it. The term “unforgettable experience” is overused, but in this case it truly applies.”

Known as the “Island of the Gods,” Bali offers not just a world-class race but also an opportunity to explore its diverse culture, stunning beaches, and vibrant local life. GFNY riders and their families can enjoy Bali’s rich cultural heritage, from the ancient temples to the dynamic arts scene, as well as the world-famous Balinese cuisine and tropical landscapes.

Win GFNY, race Pro

The overall champions of the upcoming GFNYs will race pro as Team GFNY Pro at the GP New York City on May 18

NEW YORK CITY, February 12, 2025 – The champions of the upcoming GFNYs get to race the UCI pro race Gran Premio New York City on May 18, 2025 which will commence just ten minutes before the 13th Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC, a mass participation race held on the same course.

Team GFNY Pro

Team GFNY Pro will consist of the overall champions of the GFNYs Bali, República Dominicana, Punta del Este, Cannes, Toscana-Pistoia, Miami, Bento Gonçalves and Zapopan-Guadalajara. The team will race against some of the best riders and teams in the world and get to challenge themselves at the highest level of the sport.

GFNY is making dreams come true in this once in a lifetime chance to experience something that money can’t buy,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “The riders get to make memories of a lifetime and will have stories for grandchildren when they attacked Team Lotto and Alpecin at Alpine.

A revolutionary format in cycling

GFNY introduced this groundbreaking format in 2024, simultaneously integrating professional and mass-participation cycling on the same course. This innovative approach, common in running and triathlon events, breaks new ground in cycling.

On May 18, 120 professional riders from 20 teams will start 10 minutes ahead of thousands of amateurs. The race begins on the traffic-free lower level of the iconic George Washington Bridge, the world’s busiest bridge. Both pros and amateurs tackle the same 137-kilometer (85-mile) loop through Bergen County, NJ, and Rockland County, NY, featuring 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) of climbing.

This format connects fans with their heroes by featuring professionals racing on the same roads as amateurs just moments apart. It elevates the event experience for riders, engages spectators, and provides increased visibility and value for sponsors.

GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme adds: “Creating Team GFNY Pro out of the overall champions at GFNY races furthers the idea to one day fully integrate pro cycling and amateur cycling. While certain key races like the Tour or Giro will always remain exclusive to the top level teams, there is no reason that other races couldn’t offer one mass start for pros and amateurs alike.”

A Women’s Pro Race: A Logical Next Step

Adding a women’s pro race would elevate the GP NYC further and also give the female GFNY race champions a chance to get a taste of pro racing as they compete together as Team GFNY Pro. The proposed format would have women starting an hour ahead of the men’s pro race, giving them their own stage. However, the extended road closures required for this addition increase costs by $100,000.

For those interested in supporting women’s racing, GFNY is inviting companies and organizations to help sponsor this important addition. Contact GFNY to discuss partnership opportunities.

GFNY has partnered with WHIP LIVE to offer free live tracking to GFNY athletes and their families!

WHIP LIVE is a service that enables participants to be tracked in real time on a GFNY race course using your smartphone, eliminating the need for expensive and cumbersome GPS devices and other tracking hardware. WHIP LIVE tracking operates in the background, to preserve your phone’s battery life.

The athlete must install the free WHIP LIVE app on your smartphone (available for Android and iOS devices) and connect to the event using a PIN communicated before the event. You will receive the PIN by email in the week before the race, and you’ll also find the info when picking up your race packet.

Follow these steps to join the tracking for your GFNY race:

A. Follow the link or QR code and tap on “JOIN AN EVENT”,
Tap on “Enter event PIN“ or search and select the desired event and TAP on “ACCESS LIVE TRACKING”

B. Download the WHIP LIVE app, open it, log in, tap on PROFILE, tap on “JOIN EVENT”
Tap on “Enter event PIN“ or search and select the desired event and TAP on “ACCESS LIVE TRACKING”

The application requires MANDATORY ACTIVATION of PERMISSIONS for:
  • Location
  • Movement
  • Notifications
  • Background operation

Important!

The above steps must be completed by the athlete on the device you will use during the race, and must be completed before the race starts. Don’t disappoint your family! Your family wants to keep track of your progress during the race. But they can only follow you if you sign up for the tracking.

For family members to follow their athlete, they need to download the WHIP LIVE app, search for the event and enter your bib number.

If you go off the course during the race, the tracking will end. Notify your family if you leave the course so they know where you are because you will no longer be tracked by WHIP LIVE.

We strongly recommend that you always have a tracking device on your bike. If you and your bike get separated, WHIP LIVE only tracks your phone while it’s on the race course, but your bike is not being tracked. The best way to know your bike’s location is to have a tracker on your bike.

GFNY continues to offer live tracking at all races

The app WHIP LIVE provides their tech to GFNY riders

NEW YORK CITY, January 29, 2025 – GFNY, the Global Endurance Sports Series, continues its partnership with Italian company ENDU which provides the WHIP LIVE app to the GFNY riders. This partnership, which began in 2024, has proven to enhance the GFNY race-day experience for thousands of riders globally.

The WHIP LIVE app provides a distinctive system that enables participants to be monitored during an event solely using their smartphones, eliminating the need for expensive and cumbersome GPS and tracking hardware. This not only streamlines procedures for both participants and organizers but also offers an interactive experience to the public, allowing them to follow the event live through our 3D map.

Live tracking through an app is nothing brand new,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “But other solutions suffer from being too complicated to use and/or excessive battery usage that leave  you with a dead phone at the finish line. WHIP, instead, runs as set-and-forget in the background and uses a minimal amount of battery. The app eliminates for example the “where is my partner?” questions from concerned loved ones at the finish line.”
