L’Alpe d’Huez headlines GFNY La Vaujany

Riders get to tackle the legendary L’Alpe d’Huez climb, not once, but twice, on June 20, 2021

As France enters summer season, GFNY racing continues to get back on track with the inaugural GFNY Vaujany where two assaults from different sides on the infamous L’Alpe d’Huez climb will test the best of climbers this weekend, Sunday, June 20.

While the GFNY La Vaujany course is only 105km long and by that GFNYs shortest ever, its 3,669m of climbing provide plenty of challenge even for the fittest riders. The course profile makes it one of the hardest GFNYs. 100 of the 105km are either up or down.

The host village of Vaujany is set amidst nature and is the perfect escape for riders and families coming out of the European lock down. Legendary climbs like Galibier, Izoard or Croix de Fer are nearby and wait to get tackled.

“We love being back in Vaujany,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “It’s an idyllic mountain village but with the sports infrastructure of a city. Pool, gym, trails, roads – it’s all right here.”

GFNY will be back again at the end of August for the second annual GFNY Alpes Vaujany: same start/finish as GFNY La Vaujany but a completely different course with the two giants of Col de la Croix de Fer and Col du Glandon. The week leading up to the race, the GFNY Camp offers relaxed riding up all the famous cols.

The French government provided the guidelines to hold events in June. In line with these, we decided to limit the field to 500 riders.

You can trust GFNY’s COVID SAFE race production, tried and tested not only in Vaujany in August 2020 but at five more races around the world during the pandemic.

1800 racers at inaugural GFNY Mazatlán

GFNY at the “Pearl of the Pacific” biggest new race ever in Mexico

NEW YORK CITY, May 6, 2021 – A gentle rolling course along the pacific shores of Sinaloa in Mazatlán provided a perfect season opener for the 1800 riders at Sunday’s inaugural GFNY Mazatlán.

Race day started early at 6am against a backdrop of clear blue skies. Following a tried and tested Covid safe race plan, the new normal for 2021, family and friends were able to gather to cheer the riders on their way.

Starting on the main oceanfront of Malecon Avenue, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, over 18 countries were represented making the race a truly international affair. On crossing the finish line, festivities continued with live music, post-race pasta, podium ceremony against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.

“We couldn’t be happier to see a successful safe roll out of GFNY Mazatlán,” says Lidia Fluhme, GFNY’s co-founder.” Mexico has embraced the new normal with successful Covid safe event planning and this was highlighted with 1800 riders this past weekend. It’s the second Mexican race of this size during Covid after GFNY Cozumel in November 2020. We have now successfully held five races during the pandemic and have shown on three continents how it’s done.”

Both men’s and women’s races were a fast and tightly fought battle amongst the top represented Mexican riders. 3-time Mexican champion Luis Lemus took the title in 3:10:02 while Antonieta Gaxiola showed similar grit in the women’s race, edging out compatriots by a whisker in 3:13:22.

GFNY adds L’Alpe d’Huez

GFNY La Vaujany will offer riders the chance to tackle the legendary L’Alpe d’Huez climb – twice on June 20, 2021

NEW YORK CITY – The Global Endurance Sports Series GFNY adds a second race in the dream destination of Vaujany in the French Alps on June 20, 2021. At GFNY La Vaujany, riders get to tackle L’Alpe d’Huez from two sides for a total of 103km with 3,669m of climbing.

GFNY already hosts GFNY Alpes Vaujany which will see its second edition on August 29, 2021 and include legendary Col de la Croix de Fer and Col du Glandon.

The inaugural race in 2020 was the first race in France during the pandemic. GFNYs covid safe measures were lauded by French government officials and applied to many French events happening after GFNY.

Due to this success, GFNY took over the organization of the cyclosportive “La Vaujany” which has been existing for 24 years. GFNY La Vaujany will be held on a more compact course than in recent years and include the infamous L’Alpe d’Huez climb.

“Vaujany is truly a cyclists’ dream destination in the heart of the French Alps,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “There are so many legendary climbs in the area and the village itself is an incredibly relaxing place immersed in spectacular nature. When we were approached by the municipality to organize GFNY La Vaujany, we jumped on the opportunity to bring our riders yet another GFNY experience.”

Both GFNY La Vaujany and GFNY Alpes Vaujany offer weeklong camps surrounding the race. Riders get to experience all the legendary cols that are not already part of the race to make the most of their time in Vaujany.

More info and registration for both GFNYs in Vaujany are available at france.gfny.com.

Scheduled for September 19, 2021, GFNY Santa Fe is back after its Covid hiatus

NEW YORK CITY, March 11, 2021 – GFNY Santa Fe returns to the GFNY World racing calendar after its Covid induced hiatus in 2020. This September, riders get to race the challenging 75-mile high-altitude course with 7,150 feet of climbing and a peak elevation of 10,350 feet at the finish high atop Santa Fe.

Race Director Michael McCalla is thrilled to be back for a second edition. “It’s an honor to return to New Mexico with a first-class cycling event that showcases some of the best of my home state. The event highlights both the geographical and cultural diversity that makes the southwest such a special place.”

“The course transitions from the open plains and high desert to the dense pine, fir, aspen and spruce forests of the high mountains. We’ll have a post-race “block-party” which will showcase our New Mexican cuisine and local microbrews.”

Executive Director Randy Randall of TOURISM Santa Fe adds: “We’re excited to be able to welcome back GFNY to our beautiful town. Santa Fe’s location at the foot of the southern Rockies, and mild four-season climate with more than 300 days of sunshine annually, help make it a world-class city for outdoor recreation.”

GFNY Santa Fe is one of the currently rare opportunities on American soil for riders to actually race a long-distance cycling marathon with roads closed or traffic moderated by police. But while GFNY Santa Fe is the first GFNY outside New York, it’s far from the last. GFNY Florida was added in 2020 and more GFNYs are to follow.

“We’ve been working hard this past year to connect with tourism boards and governments across the country to grow GFNY across the US,” GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme adds. “The feedback has been amazing. Many see the current boom in cycling and know that events will come back – and stronger. I can’t wait to share the new GFNY race locations for the second half of 2021 and all of 2022.”

More info and registration for GFNY Santa Fe are available at santafe.gfny.com.
