The race in the spectacular French Vercors National Park was voted 2023 best GFNY course by the riders
New York City, May 23, 2024 -This Sunday, GFNY Villard de Lans offers riders a challenging 163,4 km race course with an elevation gain of 3973m. Athletes will tackle a spectacular route in the mountainous Vercors region with the base at an altitude of 1050m.
“Villard-de-Lans is a small town embedded in French mountain nature with experience in organizing the Olympics and the Tour,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “What better host could our riders ask for a GFNY? Natural beauty and organizational perfection rarely come together in the way they do at Villard-de-Lans.”
Race week activities take place once again at Le Balcon de Villards, just above Villards de Lans. The course is tough and tackles major climbs, including Col de la Croix Perrin. The final climb to Villard de Lans has been featured several times at the Tour de France.

Cycling – Pro Racing
Gran Premio New York City is the inaugural UCI 1.2 pro race on May 18, 2025. Professional teams will race the same course as riders at the Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC – but with a 15 minute head start.
In a world premiere, thousands of riders at the Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC chased the pros of the inaugural Gran Premio New York City
NEW YORK CITY, May 21, 2024 – Tibor del Grosso (Netherlands) of Alpecin-Deceuninck took the win at the inaugural Gran Premio New York City. The peloton of the first ever UCI pro race in New York was chased by thousands of riders of the 12th Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC. The GFNY race was won by the Italians Lorenza Beccaria and Manuele Caddeo (both Team Officine Mattio).
Gran Premio New York City
The 135.8 km, Belgian classic style course with 2000m of climbing was raced hard and fast from the gun. Belgian teams Lotto dstny and Alpecin-Deceuninck as well as the Colombians of Team Medellin took charge. It was so fast that several the Continental Pro and Elite riders got dropped in the early hills and had to settle for riding home in the GFNY field close behind.
Just as at GFNY so often and with 70 km into the race, Gate Hill and Cheesecote proved decisive yet again. Johannes Adamietz and Milan Donie (both Lotto dstny), Tibor Del Grosso (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wilmar Paredes (Team Medellin) successfully got away and were able to increase their gap to 45 seconds.
The riders of Pro Tour team VF-Group Bardiani CS -Faizan tried to organize the chase but with three top teams present in the lead group, they didn’t get much support. With 40km to go, a chase group formed, containing Kristian Sbaragli (Corratec – Vini Fantani), Joshua Burnett (MitoQ – NZ Cycling Project), Laurent Gervais (Project Echelon), Guus van den Eijden (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Francis Izquierdo-Bernier (Cannondale Echelon p/b 4iii) formed. But it was too late to reach the front.
In the uphill sprint to the finish line in sight of George Washington Bridge where the start was held at 7 am, U23 cyclocross world champ Del Grosso proved the strongest, outsprinting Paredes and Adamietz.
Thousands of riders had to wait a seemingly eternal ten minutes more on George Washington Bridge before they were let loose to chase the pros who had started ahead of them. Racing the same course, UCI officials were concerned the amateurs would stand a chance to catch the pros.
However, the pro race started fast and never let off so the bulk of the pros made it home in time well before the GFNY racers. Apart from 20 DNFs in the pro field, 11 pros who were dropped early, hitched a ride home at the back of the lead groups in the GFNY field.
For the third year in a row, the GFNY race was an Italian affair with Officine Mattio team mates taking the win. In the female race, Lorenza Beccaria dropped Michelob Ultra GFNY Miami champ Emma Drabbe (Ziel CC / Netherlands) on the uphill finish. French Saure Tyffen (also Officine Mattio) completed the podium less than a minute back.
In the male race, Colombian Diego Vazquez – just missing the podium last year – had to settle for second behind Manuele Caddeo. Vazquez was in good spirits after the race, already plotting to win in 2025. Meanwhile Ruben Blanco Companioni of City Bikes Miami brought the American flag back on the podium after a few dry years. To do so, he had to outsprint no one less than US pro legend Brent Bookwalter (BMC).

The pros followed by thousands of riders will fight for the GP NYC and Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship crown on the 85 mile course with almost 7,000 feet of climbing from NYC’s George Washington Bridge deep into Rockland County and back to the finish in Fort Lee, NJ.
The English broadcast will be commentated by local racing insider Dan Schmalz and GFNY expert Chris Geiser. The Spanish broadcast will be hosted by the Urrego brothers Hector and Sergio who have reported from the race for many years for Colombia’s largest cycling website.
But the show will also be interactive as fans can comment on Youtube. The live broadcast assistants will relay questions coming in to the commentators. Additional race info will come from the Race Director cars.
“We’ve been live broadcasting the race since 2016 when live posting became available on Facebook,” said GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme and GP NYC Race Director. “What started with holding a cell phone out of the lead car and narrating the whole thing right there, has turned into a professional looking and sounding experience.”
“This year, we have the excitement of Gran Premio New York City, the first ever UCI pro race in NYC, shown simultaneously with the mass participation race held on the same course, just minutes apart. It’s going to be fascinating to see how both races develop side by side.”
Four moto cameras capture the race action at the front of both races. The fixed cameras are pointing at the commentators and the finish line.

Gran Premio New York City is the inaugural UCI 1.2 pro race on May 19, 2024. 25 professional teams will race the same course as riders at the Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC – but with a 15 minute head start.
On May 19, 2024, the pro cyclists will start 15 minutes ahead of the GFNY mass participation race with thousands of riders
NEW YORK CITY, May 15, 2024 – The 12th Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC represents the pinnacle of GFNY Global Endurance Sports Series and its 30+ races in 2024. This year, the Gran Premio New York City UCI professional race will be held on the same course, just minutes ahead of the mass participation granfondo race.
Holding a professional and mass-participation race at the same time on the same course is an event format never held before in cycling, although it is commonly done in running and triathlon. GFNY is taking a revolutionary step to bring professional and mass participation racing together to augment both race fields and leverage the scale of existing operations, logistics, and exposure.
THE COURSE
In this revolutionary new format for cycling, the pros from 17 teams will line up 15 minutes before the thousands of amateurs on the closed-to-traffic lower level of the world’s busiest bridge, George Washington Bridge on May 19, 2024.
Both the pro and amateur races are held on the same one-loop course of 85 miles (137 km) and 6,600ft (2000m) of climbing that has the characteristics of a Belgian spring classic favoring allrounders.
The start area looking over the NYC skyline, suspended over the Hudson River, with upbeat music, interviews, announcements and pre-race excitement offers the most spectacular race start in cycling.
The course passes through charming towns, beautiful nature, and challenging climbs through Bergen and Rockland Counties and the metropolitan life of the world’s capital, New York City.
The race’s finish line and post-race festival are located in Fort Lee, NJ, providing easy access to NYC, airports, hotels, restaurants, highways, and more.
RACE PREVIEW GRAN PREMIO NEW YORK CITY
The 17 enlisted teams, mostly from Europe and the Americas, will make GP NYC an exciting race.
Italian Pro Tour teams VF Group Bardiani-CSF Faizanè and Corratec-Vini Fantini with Grand Tour pedigree will lead the field, followed by Continental Pro teams such as the Belgian World Tour development teams Alpecin Deceuninck and Lotto dstny, US teams Project Echelon Racing and Skyline – Cadence Pro Cycling as well as Latin America’s Team Medellin (Colombia) and Canel’s-Java (Mexico).
Elite teams receiving wild cards round out the field and get the chance to measure themselves with the very best.
There is no all-out favorite for the race that will suit a puncheur with its Belgian classic style course: short, steep climbs require an explosive rider who can defend himself in an uphill, group finish.
Reigning U23 Road World Champion Axel Laurance (Alpecin Deceuninck) from France is the rider mentioned the most in the lead-up to the race. He will have his teammate and U23 Cyclocross World Champion Tibor Del Grosso (Netherlands) at his side.
Niccolo Bonifazio (Italy) of Corratec-Vini Fantini is bringing 12 years of World Tour experience to NYC – and can outsprint anyone he arrives with at the finish stretch.
The highest-ranked team in the field is VF Group Bardiani-CSF Faizanè. Italians Federico Biagini and Lorenzo Conforti are ready to bring the crown to Italy.
Colombians Wilmar Paredes and Javier Jamaica Mejia of Team Medellin will want to show against strong competition that they can face anyone from overseas.
The most decorated rider in the field is Mexican legend Raul Alcala: Alcala has won Tour de France stages, Clasica San Sebastian, and the Coors Classic, and wore the Polka Dot jersey for the best climber. His biggest successes are from over 30 years ago. Today, at 60 years old, Alcala races for Team GFNY, bringing his experience, charisma, and great humor to the team and the peloton. History will be made: he will be the oldest rider to have raced a professional road cycling race.
The list of potential winners is long and surprises are very much in the cards, making the race exciting to follow. The internationality of the field assures that almost all riders at GFNY have a compatriot to cheer for.
RACE PREVIEW MICHELOB ULTRA GFNY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP NYC
The Italian podium sweep of 2023 is unlikely to be repeated this year. 2024 may well be Argentina’s Cecilia Caillabet’s year after winning all three GFNY Colonia races. Fellow Latin Americans Mariana Rojas (Peru) who won GFNY Cusco and Diana Cano (Ecuador) who won GFNY Manta will be there to challenge her.
Dutch racer Emma Drabbe is on the heels of scoring a huge win at the Michelob Ultra GFNY North America Championship in Miami. If she brings her climbing legs – watch out!
Puerto Rican Erialis Otero not only won her local GFNY race but is also the 2022 and 2023 GFNY Republica Dominicana champion. Can she translate Carribean prowess into big city racing?
Male
Traditionally strong in this race are the Latin Americans. Representing Colombia and favorites for the crown are 2023 third-place finisher Jonathan Jimenez and fourth-place Diego Vazquez. GFNY South America champion Matteo Grazon (Ecuador), GFNY Zapopan winner Alejandro Madueño (Mexico), and GFNY Bento winner Cristian Lazzari (Brazil) are adding more Latin firepower to the peloton.
2017 champ and 2019 second place Ricardo Pichetta (Officine Mattio, Italy), should never be counted out based on his experience alone.
USA’s trump card is former pro Ben Wolfe. The punchy course suits the time trial beast and he’s keen to better his 18th place from last year where he battled it out at the front through the Rockland hills. GFNY Kota Kinabalu winner Steve Marshall (USA) is a wild card. Local racer and GFNY Ann Arbor champ Ben Gorodetsky (USA) is young but very experienced in this race. If he’s patient, a podium is in the cards.
And like every year, GFNY is full of surprises and will bring new stars to the light.
RACE DAY LIVE COVERAGE
A live broadcast will showcase the world premiere of the first pro and mass participation race held on the same day and course, just minutes apart. A professional crew is working to deliver a high-level race day broadcast starting at 6am ET on GFNY.COM and Youtube.
Four motos and two fixed cameras will be running to capture both races and bring the action to fans around the world. Two expert presenters each will serve the English and Spanish-speaking audiences.
GFNY WELCOME ZONE
The GFNY Welcome Zone & Café will serve as a gathering place for riders before or after a ride on the GFNY course during GFNY Race Week. It will be open from Friday, May 17 to Saturday, May 18 from 8am – 3pm each day at the GFNY Finish Village in Fort Lee (PIP Park, Fort Lee NJ).
The GFNY Café and Welcome Zone will also be open on race day, Sunday, May 19 from 8am – 3pm to welcome spectators, families, and friends of GFNY cyclists.

New York City, May 13, 2024 – Kuala Lumpur hosted the second edition of the GFNY Kuala Lumpur this past Sunday. Riders from over 25 countries tackled the long racecourse of 129.1 km with 1726m of climbing.
Malaysia’s Minister of Youth & Sports Malaysia Hannah Yeoh together with the Kuala Lumpur Chief of Police Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa and officials from the Kuala Lumpur City Council sent GFNY riders on the completely closed to traffic roads of Malaysia’s capital.
The race started with a compact peloton through Kuala Lumpur City Centre but broke up at the first climb after eleven kilometers. The second climb split the race in five big groups.
After a string of attacks it was Luke Chambers (Hong Kong) who got away at km 87. He took the solo win in 3:26:30, nearly 4 minutes ahead of Chris Dufton (New Zealand) and Azizul Azli Shaari (Malaysia) who completed the podium in a tight sprint.
In the female race, Riama Samosir (Indonesia) took the win in 03:41:29 ahead of Stella Chen He (Singapore). Degreat Izura (Malaysia) rounded out the podium in third place.

Gran Premio New York City is the inaugural UCI 1.2 pro race on May 19, 2024. 25 professional teams will race the same course as riders at the Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC – but with a 15 minute head start.
Running Marathons
GFNY Marathons bring the same concept and quality of the cycling races to running, whether it’s giving each runner a BE A PRO FOR A DAY experience. GFNY Marathons are officially measured half- and full-marathon courses and as such, serve as qualifiers for Boston, NYC and the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
European Pro Tour teams with Grand Tour pedigree will lead the field, followed by Continental Pro teams from the Americas, Europe and Asia. Elite teams receiving wild cards will round out the field and get to measure themselves with the very best.
Team Lotto dstny (BEL)
Team Lotto dstny from Belgium is bringing a mix of Pro Tour and Continental Pro riders to New York City.
“GP New York City is a fantastic opportunity towards internationalization of our sport, which is very important for our sponsors and team,” says Sport Director Kurt Van de Wouwer. “Due to the busy race calendar, we will not be at the start with riders in a favorite role, but the Lotto Dstny Devo Team is very motivated to achieve a good result.”
“The team’s presence is adding to an already incredible inaugural edition of GP NYC with top teams from across the globe.” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme.
Holding a professional and mass-participation race at the same time on the same course is an event format never held before in cycling, although it’s commonly done in running and triathlon. GFNY is taking a revolutionary step to bring professional and mass participation racing together to augment both race fields and take advantage of existing operations, logistics and exposure.
The course
In this revolutionary format for cycling, the 150 pros from 20 teams will line up 15 minutes before the thousands of amateurs on the closed-to-traffic lower level of the world’s busiest bridge, George Washington Bridge on May 19, 2024.
Both the pro and amateur races are held on the same one-loop course of 85 miles (137 km) and 6,500ft (2000m) of climbing that has the characteristics of a Belgian spring classic which favors allrounders.
The start area looking over the NYC skyline, suspended over the Hudson River, with upbeat music, interviews, announcements and pre-race excitement offers the most amazing race start in cycling.
The course passes through charming towns, beautiful nature and challenging climbs of Bergen County and Rockland County and the metropolitan life of the world’s capital, New York City.
The race’s finish line and post-race festival are located in Fort Lee, NJ, providing easy access to NYC, airports, hotels, restaurants, highways, and more.
