GFNY is back in Tuscany

GFNY Toscana-Pistoia will be held on April 6, 2025

NEW YORK CITY, October 31, 2024 – GFNY Global Endurance Sports Series is back in Italy with GFNY Toscana-Pistoia, scheduled for April 6, 2025.  The race is held in the picturesque and cultural heart of Tuscany, just outside Florence. The area is also arguably the center of road cycling in the world: some of the greatest professional riders, past and present, live in the area and numerous road races from junior to World Tour are held there year round.

The 72-mile GFNY long course with 6,450 feet of climbing epitomizes what can be referred to as the “Disneyland of cycling”: small, curvy roads with perfect climbs, fun-filled descents, and all of it amidst vineyards, olive groves and through historic towns and villages. Speaking of history: the course traverses Vinci, the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, the artist-scientist genius.

“GFNY Italia was the first GFNY away from its home in NYC back in 2014,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “True Italian granfondo racing is what we exported to NYC in 2010 and from there around the world. So having a race in Italy is a must have for us as part of the global GFNY calendar. But it is also a huge honor to have a GFNY in Italy because GFNY owes Italian granfondo racing so much. Cycling is a religion in Italy in general and in the Pistoia area in particular: everyone knows the ins and outs and riders are skilled and fit like in no other region.”

Recap of GFNY races in Florida and Uruguay

5th edition of Michelob Ultra GFNY Florida Sebring and 4th edition of GFNY Colonia took place last Sunday

Michelob Ultra GFNY Florida Sebring (USA)

This past Sunday, the fifth edition of Michelob Ultra GFNY Florida Sebring brought together cyclists from around the globe to compete in what has become the hardest and biggest road race in Florida. The 95-mile long course was hit by strong winds that added to the challenge and shaped the race’s dynamics.

As always at GFNY Florida, the race is fast from the gun at The Barn at Paso Fino.  By mile 30, the peloton had already split, with a lead group of eleven riders forming. A series of attacks throughout the course thinned the group further, and by mile 60, five riders had broken away: Olympian and former pro Luis Lemus (Team GFNY/Mexico), Steve Mlujeak (Team BMC/USA), Thomas Galindez (USA), Felipe Aros (Chile) and Fabrizio Stangoni (USA), both from Aros Cycling Team.

The final sprint to the finish was one of strategy and teamwork where Stangoni claimed the victory in a time of 3:44:46, edging out Lemus and Galindez, who completed the podium.

In the women’s race, Amelia Uribe from the Dominican Republic delivered a dominant solo performance, crossing the finish line 14 minutes ahead of María Cervini (Uruguay). Susan Haid (USA) rounded out the podium in third.

GFNY Colonia (Uruguay)

Colonia in Uruguay hosted the fourth edition of GFNY Colonia this past Sunday. The racecourse was 148.6km long with an elevation gain of 1129m.

400 riders started under clear skies and warm springtime temperatures. Right from the get-go, a group of thirty riders formed the peloton.

It was at km 36, during the first significant climb of San Juan, where three riders including Italo Junior de Oliveira Feletti (Brazil), Alejandro Ovalles (Venezuela), and Carlos Silva (Uruguay) managed to break away and create a two minute gap.

With 25 km to go, Feletti and Ovalles dropped Silva while maintaining their lead to the peloton. As the race approached the final 10 km, the chase group, led by the Florio brothers (Argentina), managed to close the gap. Ovalles, suffering from cramps, left the path clear for Feletti who took the win in 3:52:04 ahead of Marcos and Matias Florio who closed the podium.

In the women’s race, local Mariana García took first place in an impressive solo performance, 13 minutes ahead of Jana Sutton (Argentina) and Cristiane Robinson (Brazil).

Next up on the GFNY calendar is inaugural GFNY Bahamas on Sunday, November 3rd, where riders will tackle a dream course in tropical paradise.

Ahead of another GFNY Super Sunday

5th edition of Michelob Ultra GFNY Florida Sebring and 4th edition of GFNY Colonia will take place this Sunday

Michelob Ultra GFNY Florida Sebring (USA)

The 5th Michelob Ultra GFNY Florida Sebring offers riders a flat and fast 95-mile cycling long course. The main challenges are length and race speed, making GFNY Sebring the hardest race in Florida. From the Barn at Paso Fino, the race enters the closed to traffic Highway Route 66. Five miles later, riders enter a two loop course into Highlands and Hardee Counties.

Our GFNY in Sebring ends the 2024 Michelob ULTRA GFNY USA series with a race that offers something for everyone,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “The long course has no climbs to speak of but racing 95 miles in a fast peloton with nonstop attacks can be more challenging than climbing a mountain pass. At the same time, the 59 mile medium distance ride option is perfect to enjoy some warm weather riding on safe roads with friends and family before many of us have to bundle up for several months.

GFNY Florida Sebring is a qualifier for the 2025 GFNY World Championship in NYC.

GFNY Colonia (Uruguay)

The 4th GFNY Colonia offers racers a fast 148.6km road race with 1129m of climbing where the winds of the Uruguayan coastline will be the main challenge.

On Sunday, riders will race a beautiful course surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and cattle country.

Our team in Uruguay opens and closes the season for South American riders with the GFNYs in Colonia and Punta del Este,” says GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “Riders mostly from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Chile are keen to kick off their season now that the days get longer and the sun starts feeling warmer.”

GFNY announces GFNY Pittsburgh-Monroeville

GFNY announces

GFNY Pittsburgh-Monroeville
September 21, 2025

The Courses

GFNY Pittsburgh-Monroeville will challenge you and take your breath away. The race starts and finishes in Monroeville, just 15 minutes east of Pittsburgh. The course travels through scenic Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties and offers a recreational 41-mile medium distance and a competitive 70-mile long distance. The distances may feel short, but tacking the rolling hills will put a sting in your legs.

The pre-race expo, the race start and finish and the post-race festival will all take place in Eastern Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

The race starts with a short descent, and then goes right into the first of ten climbs on the course. The next ten miles will take you through rolling hills of Allegheny County and into Westmoreland County. The hills lead to a beautiful descent towards a bridge over the Beaver Run Reservoir. This may be one of the most scenic places on the whole course, we’ll make sure to take your picture! From the center of the bridge, you’ll start the longest climb of the day, 1.7-miles long with over 350ft of climbing, maximum incline of 10%, to the highest point of the course, the Cima Coppi of GFNY Pittsburgh-Monroeville.

Over the next 15 miles, the significant climbing of the 29-mile loop begins. There are five more significant climbs, each approximately 1 mile long, some gradual and some with steeper sections, with several sections with inclines over 10%. You’ll get some brief moments of rest on the descents. Then you’ll make the left onto Drenen Road and start the most challenging climb of the day. Although only 0.6-mile long, it has a 10.1% average incline, with a max incline over 15%. Once at the top, you can head straight to the finish line, or make the sharp left to start the loop a second time for more climbing fun. This course will demand you to be strong: strong quads and also a strong mind.

Once you arrive to the finish line and the finish festivities, enjoy a post-race meal with friends, photos, music and the awards ceremony.

Long Route – 70.3 miles / 7756 ft+

Medium Route – 41.3 miles / 4566 ft+

About Pittsburgh and Monroeville

Pittsburgh is a city in western Pennsylvania and often referred to as “Steel City” due to its prosperity from Gilded Age industry, it was the industrial capital of the US in the late 1800s. Nowadays, the city transformed itself as a hub for technology, education and healthcare. This creates a unique social mix, with multi-generational locals and new transplants mixing in this Appalachian city.

Pittsburgh’s geography makes it visually unique. It’s located at the confluence of three rivers, the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio, and is surrounded by hills and bridges (446 of them!), which is why Pittsburgh is also referred to as the “City of Bridges”. The topography provides stunning views, particularly from vantage points like the Duquesne Incline, where you can overlook the city skyline, stadiums, and the rivers. Pittsburgh is known for its 90 distinct neighborhoods to explore during your visit, from trendy Lawrenceville to historic Strip District, each have their own character, offering plenty to explore in terms of food, art, and culture.

Another thing that makes Pittsburgh special is its sports culture and sense of community. The city is fiercely proud of its teams—the Steelers (football), Penguins (hockey), and Pirates (baseball). Game days are a big event, and you’ll often see fans wearing black and gold throughout the city. Whether you’re a fan of sports, art, or history, Pittsburgh offers a unique blend of old and new, making it an exciting and fun city to visit.

Monroeville is the host city of GFNY Pittsburgh and an eastern suburb of Pittsburgh. Located in beautiful nature and openness ideal for cycling, while also being a 15-minute drive from Pittsburgh and all the activities to do there. Monroeville offers a variety of hotel options, restaurants and shopping for a great stay while you visit Pittsburgh for GFNY Pittsburgh.

A stay in Monroeville makes it easy to check out Pittsburgh. A fifteen-minute drive puts you into the heart of the action, with nightclubs, theaters, museums, galleries, sporting events, casino gambling, river tours, you name it. So stay in Monroeville, ride in Allegheny County & Westmoreland County, and play in Pittsburgh.
The local attractions are endless: the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins — to collegiate hoops and gridiron teams. Not to mention, the Carnegie Science Center, Kennywood Park, Sandcastle Water Park, Idlewild and Soak Zone, the Pittsburgh Zoo, the Children’s Museum, Heinz Hall, the Benedum Center, the Rivers Casino, and concerts galore.

2nd edition of Michelob Ultra GFNY Maryland and 4th edition of GFNY Cusco – Peru took place last Sunday

GFNY Maryland – USA

The second edition of  Michelob Ultra GFNY Maryland was held on a 92.4 mile long competitive course with an elevation gain of 481 ft.

Under foggy weather conditions, the race started off at a fast pace, with several attacks launched right from the beginning.  Despite the attacks from different riders, no significant breakaway formed due to the flat racecourse and lack of winds that day.  The peloton remained compact, and the constant surges kept the race intense from start to finish.

It was the “Talent X Britt NYC” team that took control, dictating the pace of the peloton and ensuring the race would culminate in a sprint finish.  GFNY Florida Sebring 2023 runner up Edwin Morel (República Dominicana) took the win in 03:31:41, followed by Ismael Collado (Collado Team) and Steven Nino (Colombia) in an 80 rider peloton sprint finish.

Laura Maple (USA) won the female race in 03:32:51, 6 minutes ahead of Jillian Foley (USA).  Michelle Pemberthy (Colombia) rounded out the podium.

GFNY Cusco (Perú)

The 4th GFNY Cusco was held on a 99.5 km long competitive course with an elevation gain of 1742m, reaching up to 3600 m above sea level making it the highest reaching granfondo race in the world.

Soon after the start, a strong peloton of thirty riders formed, including defending 2023 champion Alain Quispe and GFNY Paracas 2024 champ Gonzalo Arévalo.  Despite several attacks, no significant breakaway formed.  The race was decided only once riders tackled the difficult 17 km long climb of the course reaching up to 3,600m above sea level.  It was local Ronald Luza who put in the decisive attack no other rider could match. He took the win in 3:26:42, a full ten minutes ahead of Quispe and Jimenez, who completed the all peruvian podium.

In the women’s race, Mariana Rojas took first place in an impressive solo performance, 55 minutes ahead of GFNY Paracas 2024 runner up Lucy Machuca and Genny Rueda (Venezuela) who completed the podium.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is yet another double race weekend on October 20, 2024 with the 5th edition of Michelob Ultra GFNY Florida Sebring and 4th edition of GFNY Colonia – Uruguay.

Shimano partners with GFNY Bahamas

Shimano will support riders throughout race week of the inaugural event

Shimano, a global leader in cycling components, will be a key partner for the upcoming inaugural GFNY Bahamas, offering valuable technical support to riders throughout race week.

GFNY’s motto is BE A PRO FOR A DAY® where all riders, from first to last, get to experience what it means to be treated like a pro during a cycling race,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “First and foremost this obviously means that no rider ever has to stop during the race and gets timed from start to finish with full race results. But technical support is also an integral part of pro racing and with Shimano supporting GFNY Bahamas, riders get to have the best in business.

Shimano will be present during race week activities, including the pre-race group rides on Friday and Saturday, where they will provide rolling mechanical support to ensure all participants are race-ready. Additionally, Shimano will offer on-site mechanical assistance during the expo hours, supporting GFNY Bahamas riders with any last-minute needs.

Shimano will be providing two complete groupsets as prizes for the overall male and female champions of GFNY Bahamas at the inaugural edition of GFNY Bahamas on November 3, 2024.

What is a GFNY Super Sunday?

2nd edition of GFNY Maryland and 4th edition of GFNY Peru-Cusco will both take place this Sunday and form yet another “Sunday Sunday”

GFNY continues with yet another “Super Sunday” where two GFNY races are held on the same day. With over 30 GFNY races taking place per year around the globe, overlapping race days are unavoidable.

Whenever we have two races on the same day, we’re making sure it’s distinct offers in very distinct locations,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “That way riders have it easier to decide where to race. On our end, we have strong teams in each location to guarantee exceptional experiences. And the teams are supported remotely by our headquarters staff for any eventualities.

Meanwhile, races who are a week apart but regionally nearby have become sought after for travelers from farther away to benefit from having two races within one week of vacation. This is especially attractive where GFNY offers a camp during that week at the second location. In 2025, these are planned again for Italy, France and Germany.

GFNY Maryland (USA)

The second edition of GFNY Cambridge Maryland offers racers a 92.4 mile long course with 481 ft of climbing.

The course will take riders along Dorchester County, a place of natural unspoiled beauty, including beautiful views of Chesapeake Bay coastline.

GFNY Cusco (Peru)

The 4th GFNY Cusco will be held on a 124.7km racecourse with 1141 m of climbing reaching up to 3600m above sea level.

Race week activities will again take place at Ollantaytambo´s main city square,  surrounded by magical ruins and extensive agricultural Inca terraces.
