After 4064m of climbing, Marcela Prieto and Kieran Gordge win the third edition a continent away from home

New York City, June 26, 2024 – The famous pilgrimage town of Lourdes hosted the third edition of GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet this past Sunday.  The racecourse was 157 km long with an elevation gain of 4064 m and included the legendary Pyrenées climbs Col d’Aspin and Col du Tourmalet.

Under foggy weather conditions, French Hugo Badorc put in the first attack, extending his lead to almost three minutes.  However, during the ascent of Col d’Aspin, South African Kieran Gordge put the hammer down and crested the summit of famous Col du Tourmalet with a 3 minute lead. Descending just as strong, he finished solo in 04:35:55 back in Lourdes, over 4 minutes ahead of last year´s champion Nicolas Capdepuy (France).  Hugo Badorc still had energy left to complete the podium in a 7-man sprint to the finish.

In the female race, GFNY Monterrey double champion Marcela Prieto (Team Patobike BMC) took the solo win in 5:15:40, 14 minutes ahead of her team mate Diana Rodriguez (Team Patobike BMC) and GFNY Cannes 2023 champ Delphine Reinert (France) in third.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is the second edition of GFNY Costa Rica which will take place Sunday, July 2, 2023.

GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet this Sunday

Riders get to race the iconic Col du Tourmalet

New York City, June 20, 2024 -This Sunday, the famous pilgrimage town of Lourdes, located in the Southwest of France at the the base of the Pyrenees mountains, will host the third edition of GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet.  The challenging race course is 157 km long with an elevation gain of 4064m.

Just four short years ago, GFNY France was one single race with barely 200 riders due to being the first race in France altogether allowed to be held in the pandemic,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme.

“Today, GFNY France consists of seven races and is France’s largest ‘cyclosportives’ series. That’s the result of the hard work and insurmountable passion of Cedric Haas and his team for GFNY. Combine this with the generous hospitality of our host towns such as Lourdes this weekend, and riders are guaranteed to have a great time.”

Race week activities take place once again at Palais des Congres.  It includes the fun GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet group ride on Friday and Saturday where GFNY riders, GFNY Club members and VIP ticket holders get to do a relaxed ride together with friends and competitors. On Sunday riders will tackle iconic climb Col du Tourmalet (2115m) – the most used by the Tour de France since 1910.

A sprint finish and a climb battle to the line decided the races

New York City, June 19, 2024 – York hosted the second edition of GFNY Pennsylvania this past Sunday.  The undulating race course was just 67.8 miles yet boasting an elevation gain of no less than 6053 feet.

Under perfect weather conditions, the race started off with a strong group of riders.  It was at mile 8 when Flavio de Luna (Team GFNY) and defending GFNY York champion Ben Gorodetsky (NYC, USA)  successfully got away.  The chase group including GFNY Florida Sebring champ León Santamaría (Colombia) managed to close the gap by mile 50. With only 15 miles to go, Santamaría, De Luna and Gorodetsky attacked.  In the three man sprint to the line, Gorodetsky took the win in 3:03:53 ahead of Santamaría (Colombia) and De Luna (Team GFNY).

In the female race, Erin Collins (USA) took the win in 03:30:00 ahead of Susan Haid and Aleksandra Maz.

Meanwhile in France, the climbers had a feast at the fourth GFNY La Vaujany – L’Alpe d’Huez: 151km with 3,914m of climbing, including the famous switchbacks of L’Alpe d’Huez. And it was yet again four time GFNY champ Tim Alleman from Belgium who put his stamp on the race. After winning the race last year, he attacked the final climb back up to Vaujany together with French Loïc Ruffeaut and compatriot Stefan Van Aelst. At the finish, he took the win in 4:43:04, thirty seconds ahead of Ruffeaut. The Frenchman improved from his fourth place last year but had to accept being the runner-up for the fourth time at a GFNY.

After a third place at GFNY Villard-de-Lans 2023, Laurence Reviglio (France) took the win in Vaujany in a time of 6:05:21 ahead of compatriots Gladys Piticco and Sylvie Riedle.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is the third edition of GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet which will take place this Sunday, June 23, 2024.

The inaugural edition between desert and ocean was huge success with the riders

New York City, June 10, 2024 – Paracas hosted the first edition of the GFNY Paracas this past Sunday.  The challenging race course was 116 km long with an elevation gain of 662 m.

The race started off fast with speeds hitting well over 50km/h.  After hectic and aggressive racing, it was at km 10 that three riders got away, including Gonzalo Olivos (Peru’s national champion), Gonzalo Arévalo (runner up at nationals) and Erik Baumann (Team Milimétrica Specialized).  They worked together well and quickly created a gap of over five minutes to the chase group.

However, later Baumann had to quit the race due to a crash and Olivos suffered a mechanical failure which set him back. Gonzalo Arévalo put in an amazing solo effort until the finish line taking the win in 2:59:10 ahead of Olivos and Muñoz.

The female race was decided in a tight sprint where Caroline Lindsay (Team GFNY) took the win in 03:19:22 ahead of Lucy Machuca and Mirena Pun who rounded out the all Peruvian podium.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is the second edition of GFNY Pennsylvania York and the fourth edition of  GFNY La Vaujany which will take place this Sunday, June 16, 2024.

Riders will tackle a course along the Peruvian Pacific ocean

This Saturday, GFNY Paracas offers riders a 116 km race course with an elevation gain of 662 m.  Paracas, located on the west coast of Peru where the desert meets the Pacific ocean, combines history, natural beauty and adventure.

“After several successful editions in the high Andes, the GFNY Peru team is adding a race for riders who prefer a flat sea level course,” says GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “It’s driving distance to the capital Lima, yet a nature paradise – ideal for a GFNY.”

Race week activities will take place at Kite Club Paracas.  It includes the fun GFNY Paracas group ride and the GFNY Kids race on Friday.  On Saturday, riders will tackle a mostly flat course flanked on one side by the coastal desert and on the other side the amazing Pacific Ocean coastline.  The main challenge of the day will be the winds.

GFNY riders, families and friends will get to experience the Paracas National Reserve which has over 100 archaeological sites of the distinctive pre-Inca Paracas culture and is a gateway to the Ballestas Islands, home to a wildlife paradise and ecosystem.

New York City, May 29, 2024 – The mountainous Vercors national park was the playground of the third edition of GFNY Villard de Lans this past Sunday.  The 163.4 km racecourse boasts an elevation gain of 3973 m. Host town Villard de Lans yet again rolled out the red carpet for GFNY and its riders. It’s no coincidence that the race is among the top voted events by GFNY riders. Villard de Lans’ experience as host of Olympic Games and multiple Tour stages shows.

The race started off fast and the peloton remained grouped together. On the first climb up to Col de la Croix Perrin, multiple GFNY podium finisher David Polveroni (France) put in an attack and extended his lead to 45 seconds.

At km 43, six riders joined the lead: the French Julien Bérard, who won the 2022 GFNY Lourdes-Tourmalet, Damien Tarantola, Guillaume Cloitre, Leo Maisonobe, American Robert Alpen, and the Belgian former professional cyclist of Soudal Quick Step Team Brecht Stas. The group worked well together, extending their lead to six minutes ahead of an 18 rider chase group.

On the final climb, Tarantola put in an attack the others could not match and took the win in 4:41:22, one minute ahead of Polveroni and Maisonobe who completed the all french podium.

In the female race, Marion Bunel took the win in 5:18:07, 6 minutes ahead of GFNY Villard de Lans 2023 champion Alison Chavanon.  Camille Fahy rounded out the podium.

In a world premiere, thousands of riders at the Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC chased the pros of the inaugural Gran Premio New York City

NEW YORK CITY, May 21, 2024 – Tibor del Grosso (Netherlands) of Alpecin-Deceuninck took the win at the inaugural Gran Premio New York City. The peloton of the first ever UCI pro race in New York was chased by thousands of riders of the 12th Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC. The GFNY race was won by the Italians Lorenza Beccaria and Manuele Caddeo (both Team Officine Mattio).

Gran Premio New York City

The 135.8 km, Belgian classic style course with 2000m of climbing was raced hard and fast from the gun. Belgian teams Lotto dstny and Alpecin-Deceuninck as well as the Colombians of Team Medellin took charge. It was so fast that several the Continental Pro and Elite riders got dropped in the early hills and had to settle for riding home in the GFNY field close behind.

Just as at GFNY so often and with 70 km into the race, Gate Hill and Cheesecote proved decisive yet again. Johannes Adamietz and Milan Donie (both Lotto dstny), Tibor Del Grosso (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wilmar Paredes (Team Medellin) successfully got away and were able to increase their gap to 45 seconds.

The riders of Pro Tour team VF-Group Bardiani CS -Faizan tried to organize the chase but with three top teams present in the lead group, they didn’t get much support. With 40km to go, a chase group formed, containing Kristian Sbaragli (Corratec – Vini Fantani), Joshua Burnett (MitoQ – NZ Cycling Project), Laurent Gervais (Project Echelon), Guus van den Eijden (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Francis Izquierdo-Bernier (Cannondale Echelon p/b 4iii) formed. But it was too late to reach the front.

In the uphill sprint to the finish line in sight of George Washington Bridge where the start was held at 7 am, U23 cyclocross world champ Del Grosso proved the strongest, outsprinting Paredes and Adamietz.

Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC

Thousands of riders had to wait a seemingly eternal ten minutes more on George Washington Bridge before they were let loose to chase the pros who had started ahead of them. Racing the same course, UCI officials were concerned the amateurs would stand a chance to catch the pros.

However, the pro race started fast and never let off so the bulk of the pros made it home in time well before the GFNY racers. Apart from 20 DNFs in the pro field, 11 pros who were dropped early, hitched a ride home at the back of the lead groups in the GFNY field.

For the third year in a row, the GFNY race was an Italian affair with Officine Mattio team mates taking the win. In the female race, Lorenza Beccaria dropped Michelob Ultra GFNY Miami champ Emma Drabbe (Ziel CC / Netherlands) on the uphill finish. French Saure Tyffen (also Officine Mattio) completed the podium less than a minute back.

In the male race, Colombian Diego Vazquez – just missing the podium last year – had to settle for second behind Manuele Caddeo. Vazquez was in good spirits after the race, already plotting to win in 2025. Meanwhile Ruben Blanco Companioni of City Bikes Miami brought the American flag back on the podium after a few dry years. To do so, he had to outsprint no one less than US pro legend Brent Bookwalter (BMC).

A live broadcast of the inaugural Gran Premio New York City and the 12th Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC will be available globally for free in English and Spanish this Sunday, May 19 on GFNY.COM

NEW YORK CITY, May 16, 2024 – The inaugural Gran Premio New York City and the 12th Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC will be broadcast live on Sunday May 19 from 6am ET until noon on GFNY.COM and Youtube.

The pros followed by thousands of riders will fight for the GP NYC and Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship crown on the 85 mile course with almost 7,000 feet of climbing from NYC’s George Washington Bridge deep into Rockland County and back to the finish in Fort Lee, NJ.

The English broadcast will be commentated by local racing insider Dan Schmalz and GFNY expert Chris Geiser. The Spanish broadcast will be hosted by the Urrego brothers Hector and Sergio who have reported from the race for many years for Colombia’s largest cycling website.

But the show will also be interactive as fans can comment on Youtube. The live broadcast assistants will relay questions coming in to the commentators. Additional race info will come from the Race Director cars.

We’ve been live broadcasting the race since 2016 when live posting became available on Facebook,” said GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme and GP NYC Race Director. “What started with holding a cell phone out of the lead car and narrating the whole thing right there, has turned into a professional looking and sounding experience.”

This year, we have the excitement of Gran Premio New York City, the first ever UCI pro race in NYC, shown simultaneously with the mass participation race held on the same course, just minutes apart. It’s going to be fascinating to see how both races develop side by side.

Four moto cameras capture the race action at the front of both races. The fixed cameras are pointing at the commentators and the finish line.

Watch live on GFNY.COM Sunday May 19, 2024.
