Shimano partners with GFNY Bahamas

Shimano will support riders throughout race week of the inaugural event

Shimano, a global leader in cycling components, will be a key partner for the upcoming inaugural GFNY Bahamas, offering valuable technical support to riders throughout race week.

GFNY’s motto is BE A PRO FOR A DAY® where all riders, from first to last, get to experience what it means to be treated like a pro during a cycling race,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “First and foremost this obviously means that no rider ever has to stop during the race and gets timed from start to finish with full race results. But technical support is also an integral part of pro racing and with Shimano supporting GFNY Bahamas, riders get to have the best in business.

Shimano will be present during race week activities, including the pre-race group rides on Friday and Saturday, where they will provide rolling mechanical support to ensure all participants are race-ready. Additionally, Shimano will offer on-site mechanical assistance during the expo hours, supporting GFNY Bahamas riders with any last-minute needs.

Shimano will be providing two complete groupsets as prizes for the overall male and female champions of GFNY Bahamas at the inaugural edition of GFNY Bahamas on November 3, 2024.

What is a GFNY Super Sunday?

2nd edition of GFNY Maryland and 4th edition of GFNY Peru-Cusco will both take place this Sunday and form yet another “Sunday Sunday”

GFNY continues with yet another “Super Sunday” where two GFNY races are held on the same day. With over 30 GFNY races taking place per year around the globe, overlapping race days are unavoidable.

Whenever we have two races on the same day, we’re making sure it’s distinct offers in very distinct locations,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “That way riders have it easier to decide where to race. On our end, we have strong teams in each location to guarantee exceptional experiences. And the teams are supported remotely by our headquarters staff for any eventualities.

Meanwhile, races who are a week apart but regionally nearby have become sought after for travelers from farther away to benefit from having two races within one week of vacation. This is especially attractive where GFNY offers a camp during that week at the second location. In 2025, these are planned again for Italy, France and Germany.

GFNY Maryland (USA)

The second edition of GFNY Cambridge Maryland offers racers a 92.4 mile long course with 481 ft of climbing.

The course will take riders along Dorchester County, a place of natural unspoiled beauty, including beautiful views of Chesapeake Bay coastline.

Website: maryland.gfny.com

GFNY Cusco (Peru)

The 4th GFNY Cusco will be held on a 124.7km racecourse with 1141 m of climbing reaching up to 3600m above sea level.

Race week activities will again take place at Ollantaytambo´s main city square,  surrounded by magical ruins and extensive agricultural Inca terraces.

GFNY Super Sunday in Chile and Ecuador

6th editions of GFNY Chile and GFNY Manta took place last Sunday

GFNY Chile

The sixth annual GFNY Chile was held on a 127.9km long competitive course with an elevation gain of 1832m.

The peloton remained compact after the start until kilometer 22 when 40 riders got away. During the infamous Muro de Tunquén climb—a grueling wall with a 27% gradient— Chilean Víctor Hrdina (Team Veloz) attacked and got away from the group. After 8km, 2023 fifth place finisher Héctor Dinamarca (Team All Cycling) and Diego Moya (both also Chile) managed to close the gap. Hrdina paid for his earlier effort and was dropped by the two. Dinamarca edged out Moya in a sprint finish with a time of 3:31:44. Hrdina came in two minutes later to complete the podium, yet still a full five minutes ahead of the large chase group.

In the women’s competition, Aranza Villalon dominated the race, coming in very strong with the male chase group racing for fourth in the male race. Fernanda González (Team Cycling Training) and Caro Werner (Squadra Bretti) completed the all Chilean podium.

GFNY Manta (Ecuador)

The sixth annual GFNY Manta was held on a 99.5km long competitive course with an elevation gain of 1768m.

GFNY Manta 2022 Champ Renzo Molineros outsprinted Luis Lasso (Team Fuga2) who has been consistently improving from his 71st place back in 2019. A win at his next GFNY Ecuador would be the logical progression. Silvio Brito (all Ecuador) rolled in five seconds later, completing the podium.

In the women’s race, Andrielle Reascos (Team RT) took first place in an impressive solo performance, eight minutes ahead of Amy Mejia and 2023 GFNY South America champion Daniela Jimenez (Team Meb Liv Toscana) who completed the all Ecuadorian podium.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is yet another double race weekend this Sunday, October 6, 2024 with the 2nd edition of GFNY Maryland and 4th edition of GFNY Cusco – Peru.

About Bremen

The city of Bremen is located in Northern Germany, just over an hour from Hamburg and just over two from the Netherlands. It’s famously associated with the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale about the “Bremen Town Musicians” — a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster who embark on a journey to the city. There’s a well-known statue in Bremen commemorating these characters, which has become one of the city’s most iconic symbols. It’s located within the beautifully preserved medieval city center.

Bremen was a member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful economic and defensive alliance of merchant guilds and market towns in Northern Europe from the late Middle Ages. This heritage still shapes Bremen’s economy and culture. Bremen is a large city with many facets – history, tradition, science, nature and culture – which combine to create an ever-fascinating experience.

Today, Bremen also excels for its cycling culture, with miles of bike lanes and a vibrant community of cyclists. Participants and spectators alike have the opportunity to explore Bremen’s rich history, cultural landmarks, and renowned hospitality, making GFNY Bremen not just a race, but a complete cycling experience.

Getting Here

Whether by plane, train, bus or car – Bremen is easy to reach. Here you will find tips to help you find your way to and around the Hanseatic city.

By plane:

Bremen has its own airport, which is a short trip from Bremen center. The fastest way to get from Bremen airport to your hotel is by taxi.

Two other nearby airports are Hannover and Hamburg, which provide you more international flight options and connections. The best way to get from Hamburg or Hannover airport to Bremen is by renting a car or by train.

60 Days to GFNY Cozumel Success
Powered by Giant

With GFNY Cozumel just two months away, it’s time to fine-tune your on-bike training to meet the unique challenges of this tropical island race. The flat terrain, potential for strong winds, and high humidity of Cozumel demand a specific approach to preparation. This guide provides targeted training tips designed to optimize your performance for the distinctive conditions you’ll face on race day in Cozumel. Whether you’re a first-time participant or a seasoned GFNY rider, these Cozumel-specific strategies will help you tackle the 160km course with confidence.

Understanding the Course Demands

GFNY Cozumel is a 160km (100-mile) race with:

  • Relatively flat terrain
  • Potential for strong winds
  • Tropical climate with high humidity

Essential On-Bike Training Tips for All Riders

1. Long Endurance Rides: Gradually increase your longest weekly ride to match or exceed race distance.

  • Aim for 130-160km rides in the final weeks before tapering.
  • Focus on maintaining a steady pace throughout.

2. Wind Resistance Training:

  • Practice riding in an aerodynamic position for extended periods.
  • Incorporate “headwind” intervals: ride into the wind at race pace for 10-20 minutes.
  • Train paceline skills: if possible, practice with a group to improve drafting efficiency.

3. Heat Adaptation:

  • Conduct some training rides during the hottest part of the day.
  • Use a stationary trainer indoors with minimal cooling to acclimatize to heat.

4. Hydration and Nutrition Practice:

  • Use long training rides to test your race-day nutrition strategy.
  • Practice eating and drinking while maintaining race pace.

5. Cadence Work:

  • Train to maintain a consistent cadence (85-95 rpm) during long rides.
  • Include cadence drills: alternate between high cadence (100+ rpm) and low cadence (60-70 rpm) intervals.

For Beginner/Intermediate Riders

  • Interval Training: Incorporate 2-3 interval sessions per week:
    • 5-8 x 3-minute efforts at threshold power/heart rate with 2 minutes recovery.
    • 3-4 x 10-minute sweet spot intervals (88-93% of FTP) with 5 minutes recovery.
  • Tempo Rides: Once a week, do a 2-3 hour ride with 30-minute blocks at tempo pace (80-85% of FTP).
  • Skills Practice:
    • Work on cornering at speed during solo rides.
    • Practice riding close to others in a controlled environment.

For Advanced Riders

  • Race Simulation: Conduct full-distance rides at race intensity, including:
    • Surges to simulate group dynamics.
    • Practiced feeds and hydration at race pace.
  • Threshold Improvement:
    • 2 x 20-minute FTP intervals with 10 minutes recovery.
    • 3-5 x 8-minute VO2 max intervals (105-120% FTP) with equal recovery.
  • Microbursts: Include sessions with 15 seconds all-out, 15 seconds easy recovery, repeated for 10-15 minutes.
  • Crosswind Practice: Find exposed roads to practice maintaining power in crosswind conditions.

Final Weeks Fine-Tuning

  • Maintain intensity but reduce volume in the last 2-3 weeks.
  • Include race-pace efforts in your tapering rides to stay sharp.
  • Practice your planned race-day pacing strategy during shorter rides.

Remember, consistency in your on-bike training is key. These focused, race-specific sessions will help you arrive at GFNY Cozumel prepared for the challenges ahead. Adjust the intensity and duration of these workouts based on your current fitness level and recovery capacity.

And it’s a tough final: the course has 4000+ meters of climbing that includes Col de la Croix de Fer, Col du Glandon and the climb to Vaujany

New York City, August 29, 2024 – This Sunday, GFNY Alpes Vaujany offers racers a 119.6 km long course with 4023 m of climbing across two major mountain passes and with a mountain finish in Vaujany.

Host town Vaujany is a charming mountain village in the French Alps surrounded by many well-known climbs. It is the perfect host village with amazing facilities and incredibly beautiful surroundings.

“Alpes-Vaujany crowns a spectacular year for GFNY France with its seven races of which two were sold out,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “The team around race director Cedric Haas helped grow the series from zero to being the largest in France in less than four years. We’re grateful to all our GFNY host towns for their tremendous help at making the races spectacular, exciting and fun.”

Race week activities take place once again at Place de la Fare.  They include the fun GFNY Alpes Vaujany group rides on Friday and Saturday where GFNY riders, GFNY Club members and VIP ticket holders get to do a relaxed ride together with friends and competitors. On Sunday riders will tackle the demanding 25 km climbs up legendary Cols de la Croix de Fer (2,067 meters) and Glandon (1,924 meters) before ascending to the beautiful mountain village Vaujany where they started in the morning.
