Team MitoQ – NZ Cycling Project (New Zealand)
In its 16th year, The New Zealand Cycling Project is New Zealand’s longest standing cycling team, currently sponsored by MitoQ.
“We were not going to pass up on the opportunity to race USA’s newest pro event,” says James Canny, Manager of MitoQ – NZ Cycling Project. “We will show the world what Kiwis can do. We are not traveling 15,000 km to just participate. We are coming for a top result.”
“I’ve stayed and raced in New Zealand many years ago so it’s a great pleasure to welcome a Kiwi team in NYC,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “I’ve experienced New Zealanders as warm hearted people with a great sense of humor – and they are tough as nails. Those are perfect ingredients to do well on the GP NYC course.”
Holding a professional and mass-participation race at the same time on the same course is an event format never held before in cycling, although it’s commonly done in running and triathlon. GFNY is taking a revolutionary step to bring professional and mass participation racing together to augment both race fields and take advantage of existing operations, logistics and exposure.
The course
In this revolutionary format for cycling, the 180 pros from 25 teams will line up 15 minutes before the thousands of amateurs on the closed-to-traffic lower level of the world’s busiest bridge, George Washington Bridge on May 19, 2024.
Both the pro and amateur races are held on the same one-loop course of 85 miles (137 km) and 6,500ft (2000m) of climbing that has the characteristics of a Belgian spring classic which favors allrounders.
The start area looking over the NYC skyline, suspended over the Hudson River, with upbeat music, interviews, announcements and pre-race excitement offers the most amazing race start in cycling.
The course passes through charming towns, beautiful nature and challenging climbs of Bergen County and Rockland County and the metropolitan life of the world’s capital, New York City.
The race’s finish line and post-race festival are located in Fort Lee, NJ, providing easy access to NYC, airports, hotels, restaurants, highways, and more.
Homestays
Homestays have long been a mainstay of endurance sports. For families interested in assisting an athlete from out of town, GFNY is seeking out and coordinating the homestays for pro riders.
Hosting a pro is a great opportunity to see how they prepare for the race. It helps the smaller teams to cope with the accommodation costs involved with attending a distant race, and often a homestay is the difference between being able to come to the race or not. Following the pro’s race day on the live broadcast, seeing their good and bad moments and hearing their post-race stories gives the host a deeper connection to the race.
Sponsorship
The format of this event, with a professional race and a large-scale international mass participation race taking place on the same course at the same time, is providing an unparalleled exposure opportunity.
Cycling embodies the two most relevant topics of our time: health and the environment. GFNY adds to your company as a brand concerned with and engaged in these topics.
If your company or organization is interested to align with this modern health & eco brand, GFNY, as well as be a part of this revolutionary, inaugural, unparalleled event, please reach out to GFNY. There are a variety of experiential, engagement and visibility opportunities available, both in-person and via the live broadcast.

GFNY partners with WHIP Live to provide riders free live tracking during all 2024 GFNY
NEW YORK CITY, March 15, 2024 – Italian company WHIP LIVE will provide free live tracking for riders at all GFNY in 2024. WHIP LIVE provides a distinctive system that enables participants to be monitored during an event solely using their smartphones, eliminating the need for expensive GPS and tracking hardware. This not only streamlines procedures for both participants and organizers but also offers an interactive experience to the public, allowing them to follow the event live through our 3D map.
“WHIP LIVE has selected GFNY to provide their Live Tracking services, allowing riders to be tracked by their friends and organizers to monitor participants via smartphones,” says Mauro Rosetti of WHIP Live. “We are delighted to collaborate on enhancing the event experience and safety for GFNY.”
GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme: ”Live tracking is obviously not new and is something we had wanted to offer for a decade to our riders. However, battery drainage had been holding us back. A system that empties your phone battery is useless. Running in the background with app closed, WHIP will drain only about 10% of a phone battery in a five hour race. Perfect!”

GFNY racers have many different goals from winning the race to getting on the podium for their age group, but regardless of the goal, understanding and employing effective racing tactics is key to achieving success. While months of training, healthy eating habits, and discipline lay a strong foundation, it is the strategic decisions made during the race that can make all the difference. Developing a keen sense of timing for attacks, knowing when to conserve energy in the peloton, and positioning oneself advantageously in critical moments are just a few of the tactics that can give a racer the edge needed to reach the GFNY podium. In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of racing tactics that can help propel dedicated cyclists to their desired spot on the podium.
Choose the Group Wisely: Picture this – you’re in the midst of the race, cruising along in a pack. But wait, something’s off – the pace isn’t quite what you expected. Do you stick with the status quo or make a move? The key here is strategic group selection. Always aim to ride with a group that matches your pace. If you sense an opportunity to join a faster pack, go for it. Your goal is to find a group that pushes you just enough without burning you out.
Fueling Strategy: As the race unfolds, it’s crucial to have a game plan for refueling. Review the race-course map beforehand and pinpoint where you’ll refuel. Whether it’s grabbing a bottle or snacking on an energy gel, knowing exactly when and where to refuel ensures you stay energized and hydrated without missing a beat. Downhills are key moments to refuel since you don’t have to pedal too hard, when riding smoothly is the best moment to eat and drink and there’s no struggle of opening gels or reaching for your water bottle.
Play Poker with Everyone: Racing is a high-stakes game of poker. Keep a keen eye on your competitors – if you spot signs of weakness, it’s time to make your move. But remember, keep that poker face on lockdown. Don’t give away any hints of fatigue or uncertainty. Stay cool, calm, and collected, and let your opponent’s wonder what you’ve got up your sleeve.
Effective Communication: Communication is key, especially when you’re part of a racing group. Communicate with the riders about pacing, each rider can pull for 3 or 4 minutes for effective riding so everyone work’s together. Together, you’re stronger as a unit than you are individually.
Read the Race: The art of race reading. It’s like unraveling a mystery, one pedal stroke at a time. Take a step back in the peloton, observe your competitors, and analyze their every move. Pay attention to their body language – are they struggling or poised for attack? Use this intel to formulate your own race strategy and stay one step ahead of the competition. Also, it’s important for you to notice how many times each rider attacks. If you see a rider attacking repeatedly, you’ll know he’s getting tired and you can overtake him.
Save Your Power for the End: In the game of endurance racing, conserving energy is key. Minimize your time at the front of the pack, strategically positioning yourself to save power for the final push. Work with teammates to share the workload and maintain a strong position in the peloton. Remember, the lower your energy expenditure, the stronger you’ll be when it counts.
Know When and Where to Attack: Timing is everything when it comes to launching your attack. Study the race dynamics, identify your moment, and strike with precision. Whether it’s a stealthy move from the back or capitalizing on a moment of weakness in the group, make your move count.
Blocking Tactics: When you’ve got your team by your side, leverage their strength to your advantage. Employ blocking tactics to impede your strongest competitors, creating openings for your own strategic maneuvers. Let your teammates play defense while you focus on making your move towards the podium.
Visualize the Finish Line: The final kilometers are where champions are made. Visualize the finish line in your mind’s eye, studying the route for any twists, turns, or obstacles. Position yourself strategically, anticipate the sprint, and unleash your full power as you surge towards victory.
With these race tactics in your arsenal, you’re well-equipped to tackle the challenges of GFNY Mexico and claim your rightful place on the podium. Remember, it’s not just about raw strength – it’s about outsmarting the competition and seizing your moment of glory. See you at the finish line!
GFNY Puerto Rico starts and finishes at the world class exhibition center in the heart of Ponce, Complejo Ferial de Puerto Rico. Race week activities like the pre-race expo and post-race meal and awards also take place at the Complejo Ferial.
From the Complejo Ferial, you will ride to Las Américas Avenue, the main avenue that travels through the heart of Ponce past several important city buildings. As you approach Ponce city limits, you’ll ride past the historic Ponce Cement plant. This point marks the start of the main climb of the race, a Hors Catégorie climb of 21km with 889m of climbing and 3.5% average and 25% maximum incline. The climb travels into the Cordillera Central, the main mountain chain of Puerto Rico that divides the island.
The climb travels on Hwy 123, the old road between Ponce and Adjuntas. The road and your race course follows the Río Canas valley, the Río Saltillo valley, Río Cidra valley and Río Vivi valley. You will enjoy very beautiful, tropical and scenic country roads. Be ready for many sections with gradual climbs and descents, but also some sections with steeper climbs and descents.
When you get to Adjuntas, enjoy the main aid station at Haciendas Sotomayor. From here, the medium course makes a turn through Adjuntas and returns back to Ponce, while the long route takes the PR 10 road all the way to Utuado. Utuado is a historic town with colonial architecture and rich coffee trade history and serves as the turn-around of the long course. On the way back, enjoy another aid station stop back at Haciendas Sotomayor before climbing back over the 802m-tall (2630ft) crest near Portugués, before descending back to Ponce.
Both courses offer you incredible views, unforgettable experiences and a tough but rewarding challenge. Back at the Complejo Ferial, the post-race party awaits you: finisher medals, live music, performers, awards ceremony, delicious Puerto Rican post-race meal and drinks.
GFNY Puerto Rico is held in the city of Ponce. Known as the “Pearl of the South,” Ponce is located on Puerto Rico’s south coast and is distinguished by its historical and cultural attractions. It’s the second-largest city on the Island and has over 500 years of history.

This museum is famous for its extensive European and Puerto Rican art collections, and houses the largest art collection in the Caribbean.
The city is surrounded by natural beauty, including the nearby Caja de Muertos island, a nature reserve known for its beaches and hiking trails, and the northern mountains, which offer scenic views and outdoor activities.
