Team California racing GP NYC

On May 19, 2024, 180 pro cyclists will start 15 minutes ahead of the GFNY mass participation race with thousands of riders

NEW YORK CITY, March 13, 2024 – The inaugural UCI 1.2 men elite pro race Gran Premio New York City will be held on May 19, 2024 on the same course and same day as the 12th annual mass participation race Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC.

The teams

25 teams from over 15 countries will make GP NYC an exciting race. European Pro Tour teams with Grand Tour pedigree will lead the field, followed by Continental Pro teams from the Americas, Europe and Asia. Elite teams receiving wild cards will round out the field and get to measure themselves with the very best.

Team California (USA)

Team California is an under-23 development elite team based out of Martinez, CA.  In 2013, managing director AJ Kennedy founded a program for young riders leaving the junior ranks and moving up to the elite level.

“Team California is honored and excited to compete at the best one day race in the US,” says Kennedy. “The course is exciting and challenging. The winner will have truly earned it.”

AJ Kennedy is giving these  young guys a chance to compete at the highest level and test themselves against the best – I love that, that’s how growth as an athlete and person happens,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “And I personally would have loved to race Gran Premio NYC at their age, so I’m glad to make it happen for them now.”

World premiere

Holding a professional and mass-participation race at the same time on the same course is an event format never held before in cycling, although it’s commonly done in running and triathlon. GFNY is taking a revolutionary step to bring professional and mass participation racing together to augment both race fields and take advantage of existing operations, logistics and exposure.

The course

In this revolutionary format for cycling, the 180 pros from 25 teams will line up 15 minutes before the thousands of amateurs on the closed-to-traffic lower level of the world’s busiest bridge, George Washington Bridge on May 19, 2024.

Both the pro and amateur races are held on the same one-loop course of 85 miles (137 km) and 6,500ft (2000m) of climbing that has the characteristics of a Belgian spring classic which favors allrounders.

The start area looking over the NYC skyline, suspended over the Hudson River, with upbeat music, interviews, announcements and pre-race excitement offers the most amazing race start in cycling.

The course passes through charming towns, beautiful nature and challenging climbs of Bergen County and Rockland County and the metropolitan life of the world’s capital, New York City.

The race’s finish line and post-race festival are located in Fort Lee, NJ, providing easy access to NYC, airports, hotels, restaurants, highways, and more.

Homestays

Homestays have long been a mainstay of endurance sports. For families interested in assisting an athlete from out of town, GFNY is seeking out and coordinating the homestays for pro riders.

Hosting a pro is a great opportunity to see how they prepare for the race. It helps the smaller teams to cope with the accommodation costs involved with attending a distant race, and often a homestay is the difference between being able to come to the race or not. Following the pro’s race day on the live broadcast, seeing their good and bad moments and hearing their post-race stories gives the host a deeper connection to the race.

Sponsorship

The format of this event, with a professional race and a large-scale international mass participation race taking place on the same course at the same time, is providing an unparalleled exposure opportunity.

Cycling embodies the two most relevant topics of our time: health and the environment. GFNY adds to your company as a brand concerned with and engaged in these topics.

If your company or organization is interested to align with this modern health & eco brand, GFNY, as well as be a part of this revolutionary, inaugural, unparalleled event, please reach out to GFNY. There are a variety of experiential, engagement and visibility opportunities available, both in-person and via the live broadcast.

Preparing for a GFNY cycling races requires careful planning and consistent training, especially when you have more than six months until the race. GFNY Cozumel and Zapopan offer unique challenges, and it’s essential to be ready for their specific courses. Here are thirteen steps to help you prepare for a GFNY cycling race, with a specific focus on GFNY Cozumel and Zapopan races:

  1. Set your goals and create a training plan. Define your objectives for the race. Do you aim to finish within a certain time or strive for a personal best? With more than six months, you can create a comprehensive training plan that includes building endurance, strength, and technique specific to the courses.

  1. Assess your fitness level. Before starting your training plan, assess your current fitness. Consider activities such as a lactate threshold test or a VO2 max test to get a baseline understanding of your current performance levels.

  1. Work on building endurance. GFNY Cozumel and Zapopan feature challenging terrains with strong winds, challenging climbs and fast speeds. Focus on building endurance by incorporating longer rides into your training regimen. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of your rides to improve your stamina.

  1. Train and develop paceline and group riding skills. GFNY races require group riding and paceline skills, especially with other cyclists at your same level. Incorporate group rides into your training regimen to practice drafting, rotating positions, and communicating.

  1. Learn to ride in wind. Cozumel can have windy conditions, and it’s crucial to practice riding in wind. Focus on maintaining a steady and relaxed upper body, use your core to stabilize your position, and adjust your gearing to maintain your speed. Understanding which direction the wind is coming from is also important. Keep a low position in the drops to increase aerodynamics and decrease wind resistance. Practice this technique on windy days to become comfortable and confident riding in these conditions.

  1. Develop climbing skills. Climbing can make or break your performance in GFNY races. Practice climbing techniques, such as seated and standing climbs, and work on increasing your power output on uphill sections. Incorporate hill repeats into your training to improve climbing efficiency.

  1. Train for fast starts. GFNY Cozumel and Zapopan races often feature fast starts, with riders competing fiercely for a favorable position at the beginning. To prepare for this intensity, incorporate interval training sessions into your training plan. Include short, high-intensity efforts followed by active recovery periods. This will help improve your explosive power and anaerobic capacity, enabling you to navigate the fast starts more effectively.

During these training sessions, practice accelerating quickly from a standstill and sprinting to gain initial advantage. Work on your reaction time, as starting strong can give you a psychological edge and build confidence. Additionally, simulating race-like conditions by joining local criteriums or group rides with intense starts can help you familiarize yourself with the dynamics of a quick and competitive beginning.

  1. Be prepared for racing in the heat. To effectively train and prepare for racing in the heat of GFNY Cozumel, it is essential to prioritize acclimating your body to the challenging conditions. Dedicate time to training in similar hot and humid environments to gradually adapt your body to the heat stress. Schedule your rides during the hottest times of the day to simulate the conditions you’ll face on race day. Focus on building your heat tolerance by gradually increasing the duration and intensity of your training sessions in the heat. Stay consistent with your heat training regimen to allow your body to adapt and improve its ability to perform in high temperatures.

In addition to heat acclimation, proper hydration is key to racing successfully in hot conditions. Start hydrating well in advance of your rides by consuming plenty of water and electrolytes to ensure optimal hydration levels. During training rides and on race day, drink fluids regularly to prevent dehydration and maintain peak performance. Dress appropriately for the heat by wearing moisture-wicking, lightweight clothing that provides sun protection and allows for good ventilation. Incorporate cooling strategies such as utilizing on-bike hydration systems to keep your liquids cool and pre-cooling techniques like drinking cold fluids before the race to lower your core body temperature. Mental preparation is equally important, so visualize yourself conquering the heat challenge and practice mental focus techniques to stay motivated throughout the race. By following a comprehensive training and preparation plan that includes heat acclimation, hydration strategies, proper clothing, cooling techniques, and mental readiness, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle the heat and excel at GFNY Cozumel.

  1. Focus on nutrition and hydration. Proper nutrition and hydration are vital for long-distance endurance events. Consult with a nutritionist to develop a personalized fueling plan that includes the right mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Experiment with different energy gels, bars, and hydration strategies during your training rides, to find what works for you.

  1. Strengthen your core and overall body. Optimize your performance by strengthening your core and overall body. Incorporate strength training exercises into your routine to improve power output, stability, and injury prevention. Target muscles used during cycling, such as the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes.

  1. Fine-tune your bike setup. Ensure your bike is properly fitted to support optimal performance, comfort, and injury prevention. Consult with a professional bike fitter to adjust your bike’s saddle height, handlebar reach, and cleat position to suit your body mechanics and riding style.

  1. Practice race-day strategies. Simulate race conditions during your training to refine your race-day strategies. Experiment with pacing, hydration, fueling frequency, and gear selection. This will help you identify what works best for you and build confidence in your approach.

  1. Maintain a balanced lifestyle. Training for a GFNY event requires dedication, but it’s important to maintain balance in your life. Prioritize recovery and rest days to prevent overtraining. Get enough sleep, practice stress management techniques, and take care of your mental and emotional well-being.

With these thirteen steps, you can lay a strong foundation for your preparation for GFNY Cozumel and Zapopan races. Remember to listen to your body, stay committed, and enjoy the journey towards the ultimate race day. Best of luck in your training!

The teams

25 teams from over 15 countries will make GP NYC an exciting race. Team Corratec-Vini Fantini (Italy)

Pro Tour Team Corratec-Vini Fantini from Italy has been confirmed to race GP NYC. The team will no doubt be the favorite for the race win aside countrymen and UCI Pro Tour rivals VF Group Bardiani-CSF Faizanè. This week, both are racing the legendary Strade Bianche followed by the World Tour stage race Tirreno-Adriatico.

We chose GP NYC because it is important for our sponsors to race in New York City,” says team director Francesco Frassi. “But also because it’s simply going to be spectacular. It’s a huge privilege and honor for us to be at the inaugural race. The demanding course means that we will have to choose our line-up carefully. We will need strong climbers who can handle frequent attacks yet still have a strong sprint.”

It didn’t take any convincing when I proposed our race to Francesco,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “Both him and Luca Amoriello of VF Group Bardiani-CSF Faizanè understand and appreciate the value of racing in NYC for their sponsors. It’s a huge opportunity for the Continental Pro and Elite teams at GP NYC to learn from these Pro Tour teams what it takes as a business to step up to higher pro rankings.”

Two Wildcards for Gran Premio New York City awarded

On May 19, 2024, 180 pro cyclists will start 15 minutes ahead of the GFNY mass participation race with thousands of riders

NEW YORK CITY, February 23, 2024 – The inaugural UCI 1.2 men elite pro race Gran Premio New York City will be held on May 19, 2024 on the same course and same day as the 12th annual mass participation race Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC.

European Pro Tour teams with Grand Tour pedigree will lead the field, followed by Continental Pro teams from the Americas, Europe and Asia. Elite teams receiving wild cards will round out the field and get to measure themselves with the very best.

Team CLN-Wiawis (Switzerland)

Elite Team CLN-Wiawis from Switzerland received one of the few sought after wild cards. Founded and run by ex-pro Jacques Jolidon, the team seems built around his three sons Cedric, Luca and Nicola. However, it’s a very international squad including two Eritreans.

We are very excited to be able to get this opportunity for the young riders of the team to experience the fantastic organization at GP NYC,” says Jolidon. “We will give it our all to get one of our riders on the podium!

I didn’t hesitate to hand a wildcard to Jolidon’s team because Jacques lines up young riders who will be wide eyed and hungry to race in NYC,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme.

Team CS Velo Racing (USA)

Team CS Velo (Combined Strength Racing) out of Philadelphia (USA) was founded out of the idea Luke Bunting had to help his father who had cancer. The team is run in honor of people suffering.

Combined we are stronger and each team member is invited to race or ride for someone they feel needs to be lifted up,” says team director Kurt Dodds. “East Coast terrain is our specialty. Pairing this race with GFNY NYC will make this a huge opportunity for our squad and our sponsors.”

There have been dozens of requests from US elite teams to be at GP NYC  so selecting one is also a ‘no’ to many others who would deserve a chance,” says Fluhme. “But CS-Velo are based in our neighbor city Philadelphia so it was a no-brainer for us to have them race. Given how many riders at GFNY are local to Philadelphia, they won’t lack support at the race.”

It is so international, it’s often described as the United Nations of cycling. Athletes take on a challenging route to compete against each other, the clock and themselves in a personal endurance challenge.

The official GFNY World Championship NYC website is: nyc.gfny.com.

Cycling – Pro Racing

Gran Premio New York City is the inaugural UCI 1.2 pro race on May 19, 2024. 25 professional teams will race the same course as riders at the Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC – but with a 15 minute head start.

Running Marathons

GFNY Marathons bring the same concept and quality of the cycling races to running, whether it’s giving each runner a BE A PRO FOR A DAY experience, providing the mandatory-to-wear high-end singlet or the family-friendly destinations and organized races. GFNY Marathons are officially measured half- and full-marathon courses and as such, serve as qualifiers for Boston, NYC and the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
