Two more returning Continental Pro teams at GP NYC

On May 18, 2025, 120 pro cyclists will start just 10 minutes ahead of the GFNY mass participation race with thousands of riders

NEW YORK CITY, April 29, 2025 – The second annual UCI 1.2 men’s elite pro race Gran Premio New York City on May 18, 2025 will commence just ten minutes before the 13th Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC, a mass participation race held on the same course.

The teams

20 teams from over 10 countries will make GP NYC an exciting race. European Pro Tour teams with Grand Tour pedigree will lead the field, followed by Continental Pro teams from the Americas, Europe and Asia. Domestic Elite teams receiving wild cards will round out the field and get to measure themselves with the best.

Team Canel’s Java (Mexico)

“The Gran Premio New York City is one of the most vibrant and challenging races on the calendar, an iconic event with a demanding course and an energy that can be felt in every kilometer,” says team owner Chino Monsivais. Racing in NYC is an incredible opportunity to showcase the strength and spirit of our team on an international stage. We want to fight for the win, put on a great show, and proudly represent our colors.”

“GFNY is super popular in Mexico and with Mexicans in the US so we’re glad to have Team Canel’s Java flying the Mexican flag again at GP NYC,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “I know they have the talent in the team to race for the points, they just need more luck than last year.”

Team Novo Nordisk Development (USA)

Team Novo Nordisk is the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team. All athletes compete with type 1 diabetes. They race to inspire, educate and empower everyone affected by diabetes.

“As the premier cycling event in the USA, GP NYC is one of our main goals for the season. Seeing the difficulty of the course last year should lend us a hand in extending our successes” says team owner Daniel Holt.

“I continue to be in awe of the athletes competing at such a high level despite having type 1 diabetes,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “Hats off to Novo Nordisk to continue supporting them at the highest levels.”

Stangoni and Drabbe win the second edition

New York City, April 16, 2025 – Miami hosted the second edition of Michelob Ultra GFNY Miami this past Sunday.  The completely flat and fast long racecourse was 70.7 miles with start and finish at the Miccosukee Casino & Resort.

Under ideal weather conditions, the race kicked off at a blistering pace, with numerous attacks from the outset keeping the tempo high throughout. Several of the main teams quickly took control, clearly aiming to position their sprinters for a decisive finish.

With 40 kilometers remaining, a critical breakaway of twelve riders formed, featuring the top sprinters from each team. Following a series of aggressive moves, GFNY Florida Sebring 2024 champion Oscar Stangoni (Aros Cycling/USA) surged ahead to claim victory in 2:39:50, edging out Officine Mattio teammates Michele Bertaina (Italy) and Sebastian Sanchez (USA). With this impressive win, Stangoni secured his spot on Team GFNY Pro to compete in the UCI pro race Gran Premio New York City on May 18, which will kick off just 10 minutes before the amateur GFNY World Championship, featuring thousands of riders from around the world.

In the female race, defending champion Emma Drabbe (USA) took the win in 02:42:06 ahead of Valeria Cardozo (Colombia). “I love racing GFNY against all these competitive women,” said Drabbe. “I can’t wait for GFNY to find the financial support for a women’s pro race. I’ll definitely aim to become part of Team GFNY Pro and race GP NYC!

By offering amateurs the chance to compete in a pro race, GFNY aims to further blur the lines between the categories. While pros racing together with amateurs in triathlon and distance running, there are still iron gates between the two in road cycling. Mixing the fields of pros and amateurs opens the door to untapped sponsorship potential. Furthermore, it helps the survival of pro races where local governments are no longer willing to close roads for 100 riders. Bringing in thousands of paying amateurs who boost the local economy makes it easier for governments to justify the necessary road closures.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is another super sunday with the second edition of GFNY Bento Gonçalves (Brazil) and GFNY Zapopan (Mexico) which will take place Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Gorini and Finocchi win the inaugural edition

New York City, April 8, 2025 – The Tuscan town of Pistoia, just 20 minutes from Florence, hosted the first edition of GFNY Toscana – Pistoia this past Sunday.  The tough racecourse spanned 127 kilometers, with a total elevation gain of 1,389 meters, offering true Italian bike racing.

After a neutralized start on the Piazza del Duomo and through the old town, the peloton hit the opening flat country roads with speeds over 50 km/h. Riders from 26 countries received an early taste of granfondo racing in the country the sport was born.

When the peloton hit the tough climbs and highly technical descents on and around Montalbano, the fireworks started and a group of elven riders formed. Despite various attempts of breaking up the group, it came down to a sprint on the cobbles up to the Piazza del Duomo. There, Alessio Finocchi (ASD Team Stefan) outgunned Albania’s Mikel Demiri (Team MG K-VIS) and Emanuele Labate (ASD Team Stefan) in a time of 3:18:37.

With his win, Finocchi punched his ticket to race the UCI professional race Gran Premio New York City on May 18 as part of Team GFNY. 100 pros will race the GFNY NYC course just 10 minutes ahead of the amateurs. And the champions of several GFNYs this year get a taste of racing pro as part of the GFNY Pro team.

In the women’s race, Michela Gorini (Team Santini Squadra Force) won with a time of 3:33:58, finishing five minutes ahead of second-place finisher Michela Santini (ASD Team Stefan), who had previously finished third at GFNY Cannes. Federica Baldassatici completed the all-Italian podium in third place, further solidifying the dominance of Italian cyclists in the event.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is the second edition of GFNY Miami which will take place Sunday, April 13, 2025.
