GFNY back in Tuscany this Sunday

GFNY Pistoia offers a course just outside Florence in the global heart of cycling

This Sunday, GFNY Pistoia will offer participants two exciting race options: a competitive long course of 127 km with 1,389 m of elevation gain, and a non-competitive medium course of 52 km. Both routes invite riders to experience the “Disneyland of cycling”—a journey along narrow, winding roads with perfect climbs, thrilling descents, and picturesque views of vineyards, olive groves, and charming historic towns and villages.

GFNY Italia was the first GFNY away from its home in NYC back in 2014,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “True Italian granfondo racing is what we exported to NYC in 2010 and from there around the world. So having a race in Italy is a must have for us as part of the global GFNY calendar. But it is also a huge honor to have a GFNY in Italy because GFNY owes Italian granfondo racing so much. Cycling is a religion in Italy in general and in the Pistoia area in particular: everyone knows the ins and outs and riders are skilled and fit like in no other region.”

Race week kicks off at La Cattedrale, a historic industrial building in Pistoia used as an exhibition space. Activities will include an aperitivo on Friday evening and group rides on Friday and Saturday, which offer participants the chance to enjoy a relaxed ride with friends and fellow competitors.

GFNY riders, their families, and friends will have the opportunity to explore Pistoia, a picturesque city in Tuscany’s cultural heart. This region is also considered the center of road cycling worldwide, with some of the greatest professional cyclists, past and present, calling the area home. Throughout the year, numerous road races, from junior events to World Tour competitions, take place here.

Organizer GFNY on a mission to make American cycling great again

New York City, April 1, 2025 – GFNY, the organizer of the Gran Premio New York City professional cycling race, proudly announces the Tour of the USA, a three-week stage race for professional cyclists to be held from April 25 to May 16, 2026. The race will begin with a prologue in Los Angeles and conclude in New York City during the 14th edition of GFNY New York City.

The United States deserves a three-week stage race that spans coast to coast,” said GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “This race will highlight the diverse beauty of our nation and its people like never before. With the Soccer World Cup and the LA Olympics on the horizon, the Tour of the USA provides a timely platform to showcase world-class cycling in one of the world’s most dynamic countries.

Course details will be unveiled in the coming weeks. GFNY is committed to minimizing transfers between stages to ensure a true transcontinental experience. A record-breaking prize purse and extensive media coverage will attract the world’s elite cyclists to the start line.

Of course, there will be a Women’s Tour of the USA,” said GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “It’s not an afterthought—it’s integral to our vision. The women will race the same course, on the same days, and with equal prominence. Their race will start ahead of the men’s field each day, ensuring a clear, uninterrupted competition and maximum visibility for the athletes. This is about raising the bar for professional cycling in the U.S., for both men and women.”

GFNY is actively engaged in discussions with local governments, key stakeholders, and potential sponsors to bring all the necessary elements together. These collaborative efforts are focused on securing the logistical, financial, and institutional support required to deliver a world-class event that benefits both the host communities and the sport at large.

Uli Fluhme added. “While I’m not at liberty to share specifics on the finances just yet, I can confidently say: we are going to make American cycling great again.

Riders from all over France and across the globe flock to the Mediterranean this weekend to shed winter cycling apparel and kick off their season with a GFNY race,” says GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “Cannes has, for the third year in a row, been voted World’s best event destination. We’re proud to play a role in it.”

GFNY Super Sunday in LatAM

7th edition of GFNY Punta del Este and 5th edition of GFNY República Dominicana took place last Sunday

GFNY Punta del Este (Uruguay)

This past Sunday, the 7th GFNY Punta del Este offered riders a 123.4 km long course with an elevation gain of 1,038 m.

The race started off at Playa Mansa with over 600 riders under a clear blue sky. It was at km 20, when reigning GFNY Colonia champion Italo De Oliveira (Brazil), initiated a breakaway along with his compatriot Alessandro Zarzenon.  De Oliveira maintained a two-minute lead over the main peloton for almost 100 km. He took the win in a tight sprint of 3:01:40 ahead of Emmanuel Tolosa (Argentina) and Zarzenon who completed the podium. With his win, De Oliveira punched his ticket to race the GP NYC UCI pro race on May 18 as part of Team GFNY.

The peloton also included the female riders, who competed in a final sprint for their category. In the women’s competition, Julieta Benedetti (Argentina) edged out defending GFNY Punta del Este champion Mariana Garcia in a sprint finish and finished the race in 3:03:09. Paula Santana (Brazil) completed the podium.

GFNY República Dominicana

The 5th edition of GFNY República Dominicana was held on a 149.7 km long competitive course with an elevation gain of 962m.

Already by km 20, locals Ezequiel Beliar and Nawel Cruz broke away from the main group, forming the lead breakaway.  They worked together well until km 90 when Beliar dropped Cruz.  Defending champion Elvis Noel Reyes (Puerto Rico) and locals Steven Polanco and Roger Marte, managed to catch up, by now a solid two minutes ahead of the chasing peloton.

With 20 km to go, Marte couldn’t keep up with the pace and was dropped. In the finish sprint, Reyes had the upper hand in 3:26:01 followed closely by Steven Polanco and Ezequiel Beliar.

Reyes’ victory marked his third win at the GFNY Dominican Republic, having previously triumphed in 2022 and 2023, solidifying his dominance in the event. This edition also became the fastest of the five GFNY Dominican Republic races held so far, with Reyes’ time making it one of the most exciting races to date. Reyes now gets to show at GP NYC that he can step up to the big stage. He’ll be at the pro race as part of the Puerto Rican team Prestige Cycling Foundation.

In the women’s race, local Flor Espiritusanto emerged victorious with a time of 3:30:01, finishing over 9 minutes ahead of Melsey Pérez, also from the Dominican Republic, who clocked 3:39:20. Erialis Otero from Puerto Rico, the defending champion of the last two years (2023 and 2024), finished in third place with a time of 3:45:33, unable to retain her title by adding yet another podium.

Next up on the GFNY calendar is the 4th edition of glamorous GFNY Cannes which will take place on Sunday, March 23.

GP New York City adds upstart Italian Team

On May 18, 2025, 120 pro cyclists will start just 10 minutes ahead of the GFNY mass participation race with thousands of riders

NEW YORK CITY, March 19, 2025 – The second annual UCI 1.2 men’s elite pro race Gran Premio New York City on May 18, 2025 will commence just ten minutes before the 13th Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC, a mass participation race held on the same course.

The teams

20 teams from over 10 countries will make GP NYC an exciting race. European Pro Tour teams with Grand Tour pedigree will lead the field, followed by Continental Pro teams from the Americas, Europe and Asia. Domestic Elite teams receiving wild cards will round out the field and get to measure themselves with the best.

Team Swatt Club (Italy)

“We raced our first GFNY NYC in 2017 as a group of young amateur riders looking for races abroad,”  says owner Carlo Beretta. “GFNY was a dream come true and that dream has stayed alive over the years – we even won GFNY in 2022 with Mattia Gaffuri. GFNY is very special for us, because our story as Swatt Club is deeply connected to this race. But we never imagined that one day we’d have the chance to compete in NYC in a pro race. It’s a dream within a dream come true!”

“Swatt represents the cycling I grew up with and loved: it’s all about the passion, not just for riding, but for racing,” says GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme. “Swatt don’t waste their youth parading around in group rides for social media clicks. They’re here to race, to go hard, to go all out until the finish line. Swatt Club is as serious as they come but they also know how to showcase it in an extremely engaging way to their followers. They bring a team to both the pro race and the amateur granfondo – that’s how it’s done! Every pro team should think and act like Swatt.”

Already announced Teams:

Elite

Team Cannondale Echelon p/b 4iiii (Canada)

Team Competitive Edge Racing (USA)

Team Swatt Club (Italy)

Continental Pro

Team Skyline (USA)

Stay tuned for the next announcements.
